Undead Walking is currently doing a rewatch and recap of some of The Walking Dead's best episodes. A series of articles like this wouldn't be complete without looking at the epic episode from season 4, "The Grove."
While some may have been shocked by the events in the episode, some may look at this storyline as a way to rid the series of more annoying children. But for many, this episode was an emotional roller coaster, especially for fans of Carol (Melissa McBride), who was forced to do the unthinkable.
"The Grove" takes place after the prison's fall when all of our survivors were scattered about. Carol meets up with Tyreese (Chad L. Coleman) who took charge of the care of baby Judith, Lizzie (Brighton Sharbino) and Mike (Kyla Kennedy). They find a small cottage situated in the middle of a pecan grove and take shelter there.
The episode is full of emotions when towards the end, Carol confesses to the killings of Karen and David to Tyreese. This was a blow to Tyreese who had a romantic relationship with Karen. He is a man who generally took the calm route, decided to extend grace to Carol telling her: “I forgive you. I’m never gonna forget. It happened. You did it. You feel it. I know you do. It’s a part of you now. Me too. But I forgive you.”
While Tyreese had to deal with that information, Carol was the one who, who after Lizzie killed her sister in an effort to see her reanimated, had to kill Lizzie, as she was obviously mentally unstable. The girl intended on doing the same to baby Judith, but luckily Carol and Tyreese arrive in time to stop her.
For many, music is essential in any series or movie, and "Maybe" by The Ink Spots plays at the beginning of the episode. Seen through the eyes of someone watching from a kitchen window, the song plays as Lizzie plays outside. Later, viewers learn that Carol is watching when she discovers the girl playing with a walker. The song, written by songwriters Allan Flynn and Frank Madden, was originally released in the 1940s and was a hit for the band, reaching No. 2 on the charts that year. But in the modern age, it has a creepy, unsettling feel. Especially with the lyrics:
Maybe
You'll think of me, when you are all alone
Maybe, the one who is waiting for you
Will prove untrue
Then, what will I do?
The song is also featured in the video game Fallout.
"The Grove" was written by Scott M. Gimple and directed by Michael Satrazemis who has direct episodes of the main series, Fear the Walking Dead, Tales of the Walking Dead, and Dead City.
