Andrew Lincoln has been on our screens for a very long time. The veteran actor is familiar to viewers for his endearing role in Love, Actually but he's probably best-known for his game-changing performance as Rick Grimes in The Walking Dead. The frontman of AMC's classic comic book-inspired franchise for over a decade, Lincoln was one of the most recognizable faces in the world, playing the beloved deputy sheriff who fought some of the most evil threats that a zombie apocalypse could come up with.

Although he departed the franchise in the ninth season of the original series, he subsequently returned to the TWD Universe in six-episode miniseries spinoff The Walking: Dead The Ones Who Live, seemingly wrapping up Rick Grimes' story for good. However, he has stated that he is open to reprising the role in another project at some point in the future. And with the TWD Universe potentially carrying on for more years to come, that could come to fruition down the line.

In the meantime, however, Lincoln is returning to TV in a leading role for the first time since his most recent stint as Rick Grimes.

Andrew Lincoln stars in new trailer for ITV thriller Coldwater

Andrew Lincoln is making his return to British TV for the first time in over a decade, starring in new ITV and ITVX drama Coldwater. The series sees the Walking Dead icon play a character named John, who moves to a small isolated Scottish village with his wife Fiona (played by Indira Varma). Unhappy with his current life and eager for a change, John hopes that this will be the new start that he and his family are craving. However, they soon find themselves at the center of an unnerving series of events that will have them questioning if they made the right choice.

ITV has released the first trailer ahead of the show's launch and it's safe to say that it's gonna be a chilling one. Watch it below:

As seen in the trailer, John has his own struggles that he's clearly trying to escape from with the move, but some of those struggles look like they might have followed him there. What's worse is that he strikes up a friendship with new neighbor Tommy (played by Wonder Woman star Ewen Bremner), who is seemingly a pillar of the community. But, from the looks of the trailer, John's wife Fiona isn't convinced that Tommy is all he's cracked up to be, fearing that his influence on John will be nothing but negative.

Although the first look trailer is short, it's very effective in highlighting that Coldwater will be an edge-of-seat story, and it goes without saying that there is no one better to bring that to life than Andrew Lincoln. From his decade of work on The Walking Dead, the star was convincingly able to personify Rick Grimes' complex emotional struggles, the line of morality that he would walk, and the unnerving threats that he would encounter during his bid to ensure the survival of his loved ones.

Few know how to bring emotionally tortured beings to life quite as well as he does, and we have no doubt that he will do it all again in Coldwater when the six-episode series makes its highly-anticipated debut on TV screens.

Lincoln recently praised the show in an interview with The Sunday Times, revealing that he was initially uncertain about taking on this role as it's much harder for shows to stand out in this current oversaturated era of streaming television.

"I thought, are we going to be able to make the show that I want to make or that I think David deserves to make? And the answer was yes. I couldn't have wished for a better return to the UK."

You won't find a better recommendation for the show than that!

Coldwater premieres on ITV and ITVX on Sunday, September 14.
