Much like the walkers plaguing the post-apocalyptic world, AMC's The Walking Dead has risen from the ground even after the main series concluded in 2022. Multiple spin-offs have kept the show's legacy alive and expanded the story of iconic survivors like Negan, Maggie, Carol, and Daryl. Unfortunately, the franchise's future isn't as certain as it once was, and its 16-year streak of yearly releases may soon come to an end.
2027 will be home to the fourth and final season of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, which means the release streak will be extended at least one more year. Unfortunately, there aren't any other planned releases beyond that point. The Ones Who Live has come to a definite end, while all signs seem to indicate that Tales of the Walking Dead isn't coming back any time soon. To make matters more complicated, a reunion project still eludes us, and The Walking Dead: World Beyond concluded after two seasons.
AMC has backed itself into a corner, and there are no clear paths for The Walking Dead to explore. Fortunately, after a long period of being kept in the dark, we finally have a tease of what may be next for the saga.
The Walking Dead's Scott Gimple says he's hopeful Dead City will be renewed for season 4
AMC's Chief Content Officer of The Walking Dead Universe, Scott M. Gimple, was recently interviewed by The Direct and revealed that there is a good chance that The Walking Dead: Dead City will come back for a fourth season (even if nothing is set in stone just yet):
"I would hope for everyone to hold out hope, because [Dead City] is performing well in the numbers, and people are digging it. So, I think it's got a good shot at it, but it is a different time (...) When I was showrunning The Walking Dead, I could calculate, 'Okay, if the ratings halve every year, we have three to four years left.' That's insane. Now, it's just... The metrics are not as cut-and-dried, and the economics are very different. So, we'll see what happens. But the greater story of The Walking Dead absolutely is going to go on."
After The Walking Dead: Dead City season 2 was released to mixed reviews, Seth Hoffman replaced Eli Jorné as the series' showrunner. This change proved to work, given that season 3 is not only the highest-rated so far but also introduced multiple new characters and storylines that could have a bright future in the post-apocalyptic world.
The Walking Dead: Dead City season 3 saw Maggie and Negan finally set their differences aside (for good this time) and even led their own community of survivors. Now that all the momentum is on the spin-off's side, it would be a strange decision for AMC not to renew it, especially since there are no other ongoing projects that could return for future installments.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who plays the role of Negan, has openly talked about how he pitched an alternate ending for The Walking Dead: Dead City season 3 in which Mason Dillard didn't bite the dust, giving actor Jimmi Simpson the opportunity to return in a future season. Furthermore, Lauren Cohan, who brings Maggie to life, has teased that there are many "outside-the-box" ideas for a potential season 4. Needless to say, both actors seem confident that there will be more Dead City in the future.
Since The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 4 will be released in 2027, it is highly unlikely that Dead City will be back before 2028. However, Maggie and Negan's potential return two years down the line could also buy AMC more time to figure out what the new era of the franchise will look like and which characters could come back. After all, Scott M. Gimple has stated that The Walking Dead as a whole is still in the "middle" of its life, if not "early" in it.
While the release rollout will be slower, it seems AMC has no intention of giving up on these post-apocalyptic survivors any time soon. With a bit of luck, New York Comic-Con will give us news about what's next in the world of The Walking Dead, and if that happens, all signs indicate that Dead City season 4 could be among the reveals.
