There are many reasons why fans are eager to see what AMC has in store for The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 4. For starters, the upcoming batch of episodes will bring the iconic spin-off show to an end, which means we could be in for many twists and turns. Furthermore, there aren't any other The Walking Dead projects set to be released afterward, so this upcoming season could be the last time we visit the post-apocalyptic world for a while. But the main thing everyone is eager to learn is whether Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier's stories will come to a definitive end.
For the last 16 years, we've seen Daryl and Carol survive no shortage of walkers, traps, and, worst of all, humans eager to take over what little remains. However, their biggest challenge still lies ahead. The dynamic duo has been stranded in Europe for over three years now, and every attempt to return home has gone sideways. Now, they have one last chance to return "home," but Norman Reedus's latest comments have made us believe Daryl and Carol could ultimately decide to stay right where they are.

Daryl and Carol may not return to America by the end of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 4
Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride attended AMC's Spotlight presentation at New York Comic Con 2026 to promote the fourth and final season of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon. During the panel, Norman Reedus teased that the upcoming release will be all about finding out what "home" means:
"A lot of the storyline, especially in season 4, is finding out what home means to us (...) All of the shows since way back have all been going outward. This is a lot of going inward. We come to some realizations in this one."

Norman Reedus also teased that The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 4 gets "way sadder" and is "very emotional." On paper, it sounds as if the stories of Daryl and Carol are about to come to a definitive end, which could be why Melissa McBride even shed some tears during the panel. And if we don't see these characters anymore in The Walking Dead universe, wouldn't it be fitting if they decided to stay in Europe?
Norman's comments about finding out what home is and that his character will come to a big realization could tease that Daryl and Carol will eventually understand that "home" is wherever the other is. The two could realize that they have been trying to return to America for years now, when it wasn't really necessary.
At the end of the day, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon could try to convey the idea that what matters is the journey and not the destination, even if fans expect to see these characters back in America. Now, it's also important to acknowledge that there are a couple of problems with this theory.
For starters, Laurent Carrière has always been a big part of the storyline of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, and it would be unfitting if he didn't make an appearance in the final season. There's only one problem: He is (supposedly) in America, along with Ash Patel. So the only way for him to reconnect with Daryl is if Daryl finds a way back to him.
Moreover, there have been multiple rumors about a TWD reunion. However, this project can't come to fruition if Rick, Michonne, Negan, and Maggie are in America while Daryl and Carol are in Europe. Of course, there could be a world in which the reunion takes place without these two iconic characters, but it wouldn't feel right. As such, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 4 should end with Daryl and Carol finding their way back home.
On the bright side, it won't be long before we discover what AMC has planned for two of its most iconic characters. But whatever the case, it seems we're in for a very emotional ride.
The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 4 will be released in February 2027.
