The Walking Dead saga as a whole is filled with a lot of... death. It is even implied in its own title. Years have gone by since the initial outbreak took place and—although the remaining survivors have killed countless walkers throughout this time—the zombie-like creatures have never once shown any sign of slowing down. There's a good reason the total number of walkers has never been reduced significantly, and it is because the list of deaths just keeps growing, giving the undead more soldiers for their army.
This idea held true during the opening episode of The Walking Dead: Dead City season 3, in which a big explosion not only took the lives of many members of the New Babylon Federation but also that of the Croat. It felt like the new season was trying to distance itself from previous storylines in order to set itself up for a brand-new (and better) beginning. Now, that idea has been expanded upon in the second episode.
But before we begin, be warned: This article contains major SPOILERS for The Walking Dead: Dead City season 3 episode 2. If you haven't seen the episode and don't want to know what happens in it just yet, it's best to turn away now.
The Walking Dead: Dead City season 3 episode 2 kills off a major character
Today is a day worth celebrating. She kidnapped Hershel; she used the Croat as her own pet (but didn't give him nearly as much love as her true, own pet); she was keen on creating a new, ruthless world, and she finally got what was coming to her. That's right, The Walking Dead: Dead City season 3 episode 2 has officially killed off the Dama.
After the end of episode 1, it was implied that the villain's story was far from over and that she would attempt to build a new army from the ground up. Things nearly went according to plan, as by the time episode 2 takes place, she already has a small group of men under her influence. Unfortunately for her, Maggie and Negan saw some of her followers wandering in the streets and looking for supplies. As such, the duo decided to take matters into their own hands.
After everything the Dama had done to the protagonists of The Walking Dead: Dead City, it was clear she could not be left unsupervised. As such, Maggie, Negan, and Perlie Armstrong decided to follow her men to her new hideout: an abandoned theater (which was very fitting for the villain). After a small confrontation but a whole lot of killing, the Dama's men fell one by one until she was finally cornered. At that very moment, Negan attempts to shoot her, but Maggie intervenes and decides to hold her hostage instead.
At that moment, viewers probably thought it was a bad idea to let her live (this writer included). After all, she's the same person who "brainwashed" Hershel and convinced him to cut off one of his toes. Fortunately, there's one person relentless enough not to give up on his mission to kill the Dama, and that is Negan.
The Dama is taken to Maggie and Renata's base of operations in the hospital, where she is held inside a cage and left with a knife in reach (in case she wanted to put an end to her own story). However, she does not linger for much longer, as Negan decides to pay her a not-so-friendly visit. See, Negan is convinced that ruthless actions are needed to successfully lead a group of survivors through a lawless post-apocalyptic world. However, Maggie and Renata are much more compassionate, which is why he decides to do them "a favor" and deal with the Dama himself.
When Maggie goes to check on the Dama, all she finds is a walker in her stead with a knife in the chest. At long last, the villain who once wanted to take over Manhattan is no more. There's only one problem with this otherwise celebrated death: Maggie suspects that the Dama didn't actually stab herself, but that there was more to her death than met the eye. With that in mind, it will be interesting to see whether she eventually finds the truth and confronts Negan about it (just don't let them become enemies once more, please).
