Since 2023, we've been watching Maggie and Negan take over the small screen on a yearly basis thanks to The Walking Dead: Dead City. Throughout this time, the two iconic survivors teamed up to face bigger threats, then found themselves at odds, reconciled before one stabbed the other, then made peace, and... well, you get the idea. However, this repetitive trope finally came to an end this year.
The Walking Dead: Dead City season 3 has been a welcome breath of fresh air. The first two episodes alone ditched many of the storylines and characters from previous releases to focus on a new, more optimistic storyline that sees Maggie and newcomer Renata build a new community of survivors in Manhattan. But just when the iconic TWD spin-off show has been infused with new energy and life, it also faces a very uncertain fate.
The Walking Dead: Dead City season 3 episode 8 is the last episode of the season, and the show hasn't been renewed yet
The Walking Dead: Dead City season 3, episode 8, titled "Tenebrae," will air on Sunday, September 13, at 9:00 p.m. ET / PT and at 12:00 a.m. PT on the AMC+ streaming platform. Furthermore, it will serve as the finale of season 3, which just got a whole lot darker thanks to the endings of episodes 5 and 6. After all, Negan is now on a collision course with Maggie and Renata's entire community, which threatens to destroy everything these characters have been working for.
On the one hand, it will be interesting to see how this tale comes to an end and whether Dillard and Negan can get back on good terms once again. On the other hand, this is the last confirmed episode of The Walking Dead: Dead City that we know of. Although fans expected AMC to renew the show for a fourth season during San Diego Comic-Con 2026, this was ultimately not the case. For the time being, it is uncertain whether a new batch of episodes will ever materialize.
Dead City has enjoyed yearly releases since it first aired in 2023, but the streak will finally come to an end. After all, the only project in AMC's iconic franchise set to hit the small screen in 2027 is The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 4, which will act as the final chapter of the beloved spin-off show. Beyond that, we don't know what the future holds for the post-apocalyptic world.
Since the first season of the original The Walking Dead show was released all the way back in 2010, AMC has given fans yearly releases across the main series and its many spin-offs. The streak will reach 17 years in 2027, and while all signs suggest it will keep growing, there are no active projects in development (and if there are, they haven't been announced yet). AMC has remained tight-lipped about the saga's next steps or whether a reunion project is actually happening.
Of course, it's very unlikely that The Walking Dead: Dead City will be canceled now that it has hit its highest point. Besides, New York Comic-Con lies just around the corner, and it isn't far-fetched to assume that at least one big TWD announcement will come our way there. But until then, The Walking Dead: Dead City season 3, episode 8 could potentially be the last time we ever see Maggie and Negan take over the small screen. So hopefully, they either go out with a bang or the show makes it very clear that more stories are awaiting viewers in the future.
