Longtime fans of AMC's Walking Dead franchise have been concerned about the immediate future of the TWD Universe. Even without the original series on the air, they story has found a way to continue via three relatively new spinoffs that have all served as sequels to The Walking Dead itself. However, in recent months, it's been starting to feel like the franchise - or at least this chapter of it - has been running out of road.
The good news is that this no longer seems to be the case as the last standing TWD spinoff has seen a number of future updates in recent weeks which directly contradict a report that suggested it would end too. And, needless to say, Walking Dead fans are very, very happy about that.
Dead City now expected to return for a fourth season (despite rumors suggesting it was ending)
The Walking Dead: Dead City may live to fight another year. The veteran TWD Universe spinoff is set to air its third season on AMC and AMC+ this summer, but a report from earlier this year suggested that it would be ending after that. And if that were the case, it would mean the end of ongoing TWD shows for the time being (there are still plans to launch more in the future). Thankfully, it doesn't appear to be the case at all.
According to a new report, critics who screened the full third season of Dead City have refuted claims that it will be the final season, suggesting that it does lay the groundwork for a potential fourth installment. This comes after a number of production updates suggested that a fourth season could be planned - which obviously is another positive sign that AMC isn't done with Maggie and Negan's adventures in New York City just yet.
This understandably comes as music to fans ears, as there was worry about what the end of Dead City might mean for the immediate future of the franchise. Fellow spinoff Daryl Dixon is set to end this year with its fourth and final season, with the announcement at San Diego Comic-Con in 2025 catching fans off-guard. Meanwhile, the Rick and Michonne-starring miniseries The Ones Who Live was only designed to run for one season. And that means that the future of The Walking Dead as a whole - right now at least - is riding on the fate of Dead City.
The fact that this new update has already surfaced before the new season has even premiered is sweeting an already sweet deal for TWD fans - as the third season has received overwhelming praise with the vast consensus being that it's the best season of the spinoff thus far. Undead Walking's own review goes as far as to call it one of the best seasons in the whole TWD Universe.
As for whether AMC will officially make the renewal announcement in the near-future? The answer is yes. If the cable network is indeed planning a fourth season of the spinoff, that announcement will likely come at San Diego Comic-Con. Dead City will be hosting a panel during the event, which features stars Lauren Cohan, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Aimee Garcia, and Raúl Castillo, showrunner Seth Hoffman, and Chief Content Officer of The Walking Dead Universe Scott M. Gimple. As the TWD Universe bosses have used the SDCC panels of their respective spinoffs to announce major updates, news, returns, and plans, it's reasonable to expect that a potential fourth season announcement may well be on the cards.
While all rumors and reports must be taken with a grain of salt until otherwise confirmed by AMC (which may well happen this Friday!), this is a positive sign for the future of both Dead City and the TWD Universe as a whole. If the show does end after its third season, it would leave next year without any TWD shows - breaking a 17-year streak for the franchise. Here's hoping that the SDCC panel confirms this won't be happening.
