The Walking Dead franchise gets unexpected future update

As fans of The Walking Dead franchise eagerly await the new seasons of the TWD spinoffs, one star had some surprising things to say about the future of Dead City.

To call the Walking Dead franchise a veteran of television would still feel like we're understating just how long it's been a part of the pop-culture landscape. It all started for the AMC saga when the original series premiered on the cable network back in 2010, adapting Robert Kirkman's comic series in all its vivid glory. And that show remained a part of the landscape until its end in 2022, all while launching a multitude of spinoffs both during and after that run.

The future of the TWD Universe has remained relatively stable on a year-to-year basis since then, with spinoffs Daryl Dixon, Dead City, and The Ones Who Live designed to chart a course for these beloved Walking Dead characters. But with one having already ended and the other's end almost upon us, where does that leave the last spinoff standing - and, by extension, the future of the TWD story?

With some fight left, it seems.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan addresses potential future seasons of Dead City

It sounds like there might still be some life left in The Walking Dead: Dead City yet. With The Ones Who Live having run for just one season and Daryl Dixon now set to conclude after four, it seems that the Maggie Rhee and Negan spinoff will be the last one standing. And, according to one of the stars, we might get another season or two out of it yet.

Dead City season 3 is set to premiere on both AMC and AMC+ this summer and, ahead of its July debut, the series had its official world premiere at at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival in Monaco. Stars Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan were in attendance at the event and they teased viewers with what audiences can expect from Maggie and Negan in the upcoming season. However, one particular answer from the pair has caught the attention of fans as it seems to confirm that the rumors of Dead City's demise aren't true.

When speaking to the press, the pair were asked about what they wanted for their characters and where they might end up. During that interview (which can be viewed here in a tweet) Cohan answered with a reflective point about the difficulties of being able to see that goal when you're busy living the experience in the moment - pointing out how in life we often want "some grand thing" only to realize "how comforting routine is". Morgan then joked that there is "no ending" for Maggie and Negan, saying:

"You know what this means? It means there is no ending for these characters. I guess we're going to have to do another year or two to figure it out."

Needless to say, these comments have allowed the TWD fans to breathe a sigh of relief as it would imply that Dead City might have another season or two left in it yet. The spinoff had been in the headlines in recent months as rumors from a number of well-known insiders suggested that the third season of the show woudl be its last. Obviously, this would imply otherwise.

It goes without saying that it would be pretty odd practice for AMC to officially announce that Daryl Dixon will conclude with its fourth season without showing Dead City the same courtesy. While they did admittedly hold off on confirming that The Ones Who Live had ended after its first season until the finale aired, that was a very specific case as the show turned out to be a miniseries. Neither Daryl Dixon nor Dead City are, so it would be only fair that they are treated equally.

The third season of the show promises to take it in an exciting new direction, largely due to the vision of new showrunner Seth Hoffman. A veteran of the franchise who served as one of the primary executive producers and writers of The Walking Dead during what many consider to be some of its peak seasons (season 4, 5, and 6), Hoffman has teased a very different story from the spinoff heading into season 3.

Dead City has been the most divisive of the newer TWD Universe offshoots. The Maggie and Negan feud - which started back in season 6 of the original series when Negan killed Maggie's husband Glenn and she vowed revenge - had to be revived in order for the spinoff to work, and some felt that this undid the progress that the TWD series finale actually made. However, having decided to work together for the greater good and rescue Manhattan from the post-apocalyptic era, the third season looks to be taking a more hopeful and uplifting approach - one that has been met with positive feedback from fans thus far.

The TWD Universe is still very much moving forward it seems. If that means we get another one or two seasons of Dead City to keep it alive and while as the creatives figure out what the next chapter of the franchise looks like, then you can bet that fans will be more than happy with that. Dead City seasons 4 and 5, anyone?!

The Walking Dead: Dead City season 3 arrives on AMC and AMC+ on July 26, 2026.
