While AMC has confirmed The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon will be coming to an end following the show’s fourth season, series star Norman Reedus doesn’t seem eager to walk away from the franchise or his character.
“[The Walking Dead] taught me a work ethic I didn't think I had before. A passion I didn't think I had before, I had done other parts, but to be able to be on-screen playing one part this long is so rare. It's a character I love, [I love the] people I work with. I care about it so tremendously that it's, it's borderline obsession, I think, I'm gonna miss all of it,” Reedus reflected at The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon’s San Diego Comic-Con panel. “I mean there's still a lot to go like our seasons are getting bigger in episode length, so there's a lot of hours of television still to go, and who knows what's gonna happen after that. I eat, breathe, and think Daryl Dixon all day long.”
While Reedus, of course, did not confirm he’ll remain within the franchise after Daryl Dixon comes to an end, his comment seems to suggest the show’s end might not be the end of Daryl’s story. This is a sentiment that was echoed by creator David Zabel, who went as far to hit that while season 4 will be the end of this chapter in Daryl’s story teasing that “what lies beyond that for these characters, we will see. I’m sure there’s plenty, and we’re always talking about it."
Honestly, it makes complete sense that AMC is looking ahead to what the next chapter in Daryl’s story might look like.
From the beginning, Daryl has been not only one of the most popular characters in the franchise, but also one of the franchise’s most important characters. We’ve followed Daryl on such a journey over these last 15 years, and fans would happily continue to follow his adventures for years to come.
As we still have two seasons of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon ahead, there’s no telling where these next two chapters in the story will take his character next. What we do know is that the plan is to bring a close to Daryl’s European adventure, which begs the question: Could Daryl and Carol head back to the States after the show ends?
It’s clear that an end needs to be charted for the character and what better way to bring Daryl’s story to an end than in a Walking Dead spinoff that sees Daryl and Carol finally reuniting with Rick and Michonne? Fans have been begging to see Rick and Daryl back together on screen, and with the future of The Ones Who Live up in the air, what better way to bring the story to a close than by reuniting the characters in an epic spinoff event?!
We can even toss in Negan and Maggie, with this spinoff serving as the ultimate culmination of The Walking Dead franchise. Bring these iconic characters back together by finding a way to weave the three spinoffs’ narratives together to give fans a spinoff that ties up these characters’ journeys in a manner that allows fans to see them reunited one last time.
