The Walking Dead is officially changing main characters in 2027

The Walking Dead has evolved countless times over the past few years and it's going to do it again in 2027, going back to two beloved characters once again.

It's been quite the journey for The Walking Dead franchise. With a bit of luck, it isn't over for the AMC juggernaut just yet, but a change is certainly gonna come to the TWD Universe regardless. It isn't necessarily a change that reflects the state of the franchise, but more one that highlights the ever-changing landscape of television, with AMC's Chief Content Officer of The Walking Dead Universe, Scott M. Gimple, confirming that there would be a slower rollout going forward.

Over the past few years, the world of The Walking Dead has been less about churning out a lot of episodes and more about telling condensed character-focused stories, using TWD veterans to do that. The multiple sequel spinoffs have spotlighted beloved Walking Dead icons like Rick Grimes and Michonne (The Ones Who Live), Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier (Daryl Dixon) and Maggie Rhee and Negan (Dead City), with each show taking turns in taking fans back to the TWD Universe each year since 2023.

As the franchise's less-is-more era is set to begin, it looks set to swap out its leads... perhaps one more time.

Daryl and Carol return to the spotlight in Daryl Dixon's final season next year

Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier will take the reins as the leaders of The Walking Dead franchise one more time in 2027 when The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon premieres on both AMC and AMC+. The fourth and final season of the fan-favorite spinoff marks the last time that the beloved duo will headline the franchise - at least as part of this show - as they take over from Dead City's Maggie and Negan once again.

Daryl Dixon and Dead City have really become the foundations of The Walking Dead Universe after the conclusion of the original series in 2022. Although they were two of three new spinoffs, the highly-anticipated The Ones Who Live ended up being a miniseries, running for just one season to wrap up the storylines of Andrew Lincoln's Rick Grimes and Danai Gurira's Michonne. So while the pair were among the faces of the new era, Rick and Michonne's return stint was intentionally short-lived. As a result, Maggie and Negan kept swapping the role as leads of the franchise with Daryl and Carol.

Dead City was the first of the newer spinoffs to air back in 2023, placing Maggie and Negan front and center of the TWD Universe's new post-Walking Dead era, as the pair with the darkest backstory in the franchise's history ventured into New York City. They then handed the baton off to Daryl Dixon in the first season of his spinoff that same year, with Carol arriving in France to find him at the very end of the season. As 2024 commenced, Rick and Michonne took center stage for The Ones Who Live before Daryl Dixon broadcast Daryl and Carol's reunion in the second season of the spinoff to close out the year.

After that, Dead City returned from its two-year hiatus for its second season before Daryl Dixon season 3 took Daryl and Carol to Spain that same year (2025). And in 2026, Maggie and Negan's third outing received critical acclaim as Dead City went through a soft reboot, setting the stage for a potentially much longer run (if renewed for another season). And now that has set the stage for Daryl and Carol to take over one more time as the pair look to lead the TWD Universe into 2027.

Daryl Dixon season 4 will see Daryl and Carol attempt to find their way back to the US, to Alexandria, to their home, and to their family. That has very much been the M.O. of the entire spinoff as the duo have ventured from France to England and now to Spain in a bid to get home. They came oh-so-close in the season 3 finale, having spent the season building a boat capable of taking them and some of their newest friends from Solaz del Mar back to the States, but as things go in the TWD Universe, it didn't quite work out.

As for what happens after that, it remains to be seen. Hopes are high that the franchise will return to Maggie and Negan at least one more time as fans are awaiting the fate of Dead City, holding out hope that it will be renewed for a season 4. Scott Gimple says that there's a good chance of that, but there are fears as to whether it might not happen given that the fate of the whole TWD Universe franchise remains up in the air.

Both Gimple and AMC Studios President Dan McDermott have been upfront about the fact that there is more Walking Dead on the horizon as the franchise does have a future at AMC, but it's unclear as to what that actually means. More shows will come and the main characters of the franchise will change once again, but the question remains as to who it will change to - or change back to.

Despite Daryl Dixon's impending conclusion, Gimple, McDermott, and all involved at AMC are hopeful that Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride will reprise their roles as Daryl and Carol in the near-future. Moreover, Gimple still hopes to make that long-awaited reunion crossover, bringing back Rick Grimes and Michonne in what would effectively be a revival of The Walking Dead, reuniting them with Daryl, Carol, Maggie, and Negan. If that were to happen, it would likely be the end of the main chapter of the TWD story, potentially setting up the next chapter in the process.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 4 airs and streams on AMC and AMC+ in 2027.
