Actress Sonquea Martin-Green said goodbye to Capt. Michael Burnham in the fourth and final season of Star Trek: Discovery in 2024. She is fondly remembered for her portrayal of Sasha in The Walking Dead. Next, she will star in an indie film, My Dead Friend Zoe.

The film, which premiered at SXSW in 2024, is directed by Kyle Hausmann-Stokes who co-wrote the story with A.J. Bermudez. My Dead Friend Zoe is based on Hausmann-Stokes short film Merit x Zoe and marks his directorial debut.

In addition to Martin-Greene, who portrays Merit, the film's cast includes Natalie Morales as Zoe, and Ed Harris, Morgan Freeman, Gloria Reuben, Utkarsh Ambudkar, and Thom Tan.

The story follows US Army Veteran Merit, who is estranged form her family due to her strange yet comfortable relationship with her dead friend Zoe, who served in the military with her. While she is completely aware of the dysfunctional relationship, she doesn't have the heart to let her friend go.

When her grandfather (Harris) and hero, whom she is estranged, has a fall and requires Merit to care for him, she is determined to mend their relationship. She journeys to her family's lake house to renew their bond.

Film Independent has announced that the movie will have a special screening on Thursday, February 27, followed by a Q&A with co-writer/director Kyle Hausmann-Stokes and actors Sonequa Martin-Green and Natalie Morales. This event occurs one day before the movie is released in theaters, and you can find tickets on the movie's website.

" At its core, this is a buddy film about a complicated friendship, a divided family, and the complex ways in which we process grief."
