There’s a certain expectation that comes with being part of a show like The Walking Dead. It’s intense, it’s long-running, and for many actors, it became the role they’re most associated with. But not everyone stayed stuck in that shadow.

In fact, a good amount of Walking Dead alumni did the opposite. They took that recognition and used it as momentum, landing major roles in Netflix originals that feel fresh, different, and in some cases, even bigger than what they were doing before. In this article, we shared five Walking Dead stars who found a strong second act on Netflix!

The Walking Dead season 6
Steven Yeun as Glenn Rhee - The Walking Dead season 6 | Gene Page/AMC

Steven Yeun reinvents himself in Beef

There was always something grounded about Steven Yeun’s performance as Glenn Rhee. Even when the world around him fell apart, Glenn felt like someone you could actually know. He was decent, thoughtful, and always trying to do the right thing.

That’s part of what makes his role in Netflix's Beef so surprising. In Beef, Yeun plays Danny Cho, a contractor stuck in a cycle of frustration, financial pressure, and quiet resentment. The story begins with a seemingly minor road rage incident, but what follows is a slow emotional unraveling between two strangers who become dangerously obsessed with each other.

Yeun leans fully into the discomfort of the role in this dark comedy series. Danny isn’t polished or particularly likable, and the show doesn’t try to soften him. Yeun’s performance feels lived-in and almost uncomfortably honest, which is exactly why it resonated so strongly with audiences and critics.

Overall, Beef proved that Yeun could lead a series and that he could disappear into a role that is almost the opposite of what made him famous.

The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live season 1
Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes - The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live season 1 | Gene Page/AMC

Andrew Lincoln shows his range in Penguin Bloom

It’s almost impossible to talk about Andrew Lincoln without thinking of Rick Grimes. On The Walking Dead, Rick had to deal with being a leader, constant pressure, constant loss, and constant decisions where none of the options were good.

In Netflix's Penguin Bloom, that pressure disappears entirely. Lincoln plays Cameron Bloom, a husband navigating the aftermath of a life-changing accident in his family. The story isn’t about survival in the traditional sense. It’s about adjustment and learning how to live when everything familiar has changed.

What stands out is how still the performance is. Lincoln doesn’t lean into big emotional moments in this drama film. Instead, he spends a lot of time listening, absorbing, and reacting quietly. That choice makes the character feel more real. It makes him feel less like someone “performing grief” and more like someone actually living inside it.

It’s a reminder that Lincoln’s acting strength isn’t just intensity. It’s presence. He can hold a scene without pushing it, which is a very different kind of skill than what The Walking Dead usually demanded from him.

The Walking Dead season 6
Austin Abrams as Ron - The Walking Dead season 6 | Gene Page/AMC

Austin Abrams finds a new voice in Do Revenge

Austin Abrams played Ron on The Walking Dead, a character who was constantly reacting to stress, fear, and confusion. It was a heavy role, even if it wasn’t long-lasting. Netflix's Do Revenge is the opposite kind of experience.

The teen black comedy film is fast-paced, stylish, and it doesn’t take itself too seriously. Abrams gets to play in that space, bringing a mix of charm and unpredictability that fits the tone perfectly. It’s the kind of role that shows he’s not limited to one type of character. He can handle drama, but he can also lean into something more playful. That flexibility matters!

Do Revenge centers around two students who form a secret alliance to take revenge on each other’s enemies. But what starts as a calculated plan quickly spirals into shifting loyalties, emotional complications, and unexpected connection.

The Walking Dead season 2
Shane Walsh (Jon Bernthal) - The Walking Dead season 2 | Gene Page/AMC

Jon Bernthal doubles down on intensity across Netflix projects

Before becoming a major presence on Netflix, Jon Bernthal made a lasting impression on The Walking Dead as Shane Walsh. Shane was Rick's volatile best friend whose descent into paranoia and ruthlessness made him one of the show’s most memorable early characters.

After his time in the apocalypse, Bernthal’s career only gained momentum. He took on the lead role in the former Netflix series The Punisher, playing Frank Castle, a former Marine turned vigilante driven by grief and revenge.

He later appeared in the Netflix drama film The Unforgivable alongside Sandra Bullock. The film centers on a woman trying to rebuild her life after prison, and Bernthal played Blake, a coworker who forms a brief but meaningful connection with her. Bernthal also most recently starred in the hit Netflix thriller series His & Hers, where he played a detective investigating a murder that may be closer to home than it seems.

Virgin River season 6
Alexandra Breckenridge as Mel Monroe in episode 602 of Virgin River | Netflix

Alexandra Breckenridge anchors a Netflix favorite with Virgin River

Alexandra Breckenridge didn’t exactly get a peaceful storyline on The Walking Dead. As Jessie, she was constantly dealing with danger, tension, and a situation that felt like it could collapse at any moment. That’s part of what makes her role in Virgin River so satisfying to watch.

The show is much more grounded in everyday emotions. Breckenridge plays Mel Monroe, a character who’s trying to rebuild her life in a small town that feels worlds away from anything resembling an apocalypse.

She brings a calm, steady presence to the role that really works for the tone of the romantic drama series. And clearly, audiences agree. Virgin River has become one of Netflix’s most reliable hits. Honestly, it’s proof that sometimes the best move after a high-intensity role is to slow things down.
