The Walking Dead's early seasons focused on a small group of survivors who moved from place to place, longing to locate a safe and fortified home base. In season 3, with Lori's (Sarah Wayne Callies) pregnancy nearing the end, this became priority No. 1. Luckily, they stumbled upon West Georgia Correctional Facility.
Despite the yard being overrun by a large number of inmates turned walkers, the prison offered everything needed to keep the group safe. Once the walkers were cleared and the group made its way inside, it seemed that they would be safe, for the time being, at least.
The premiere episode of season 3, "Seed," ended with Rick (Andrew Lincoln) hacking off Hershel's (Scott Wilson) leg after he was bitten by a walker in order to save his life. The camera pans back to reveal a group of five inmates who look on in shock.
The following episode, "Sick," picks up in the cafeteria where the five inmates have been locked since the outbreak. They knew nothing of what had transpired outside the walls of the prison and are shocked to learn about people raising from the dead.
The two groups clash, as the C Block, where the survivors decided to live, was previous inhabited by Tomas and his crew. They demand to be allowed back in their block but instead reach a compromise. Rick and his group will help the prisoners clear another block in exchange for half of their food. Being locked in the cafeteria with the prisons food supplies is what kept the prisoners alive.
