Zombies and a good choice game? What more could a person ask for? I’m an avid gamer, and I can admit The Walking Dead: Michonne is what truly got me hooked into the series. I spent years avoiding the show because it was “too” gory and zombies are scary. But seeing Michonne get her own spin-off game made me give the story a try, and I’ve been a super fan ever since.
For those unfamiliar with The Walking Dead: Michonne, it is the fourth game in a six-game series created by Telltale Games. Telltale is also responsible for their critically acclaimed game The Wolf Among Us as well as numerous Batman games, amongst other things.
The best order to play is the order they were released in. And it starts with The Walking Dead: Season One (2012). The main series follows two unlikely survivors as they navigate the apocalypse: Precocious Clementine and her new guardian Lee. The game allows you to meet new and exciting people while also making the player make some heartbreaking choices. I won’t go into too much detail on that. But I will say, PLAY the games.
If you’re a fan of games like Detroit: Become Human and Life is Strange, then the Telltale series is made for you. The games feature great artwork and amazing voice acting.
Some other great features of the games are their mechanics. The games aren’t just a walking simulator or a static visual novel. The players can move around and interact with the different people and objects in their environment. There are several environmental puzzles requiring tools for the player to use. As well as many places to explore. But that’s not all; there are also plenty of QTEs, or quick time events, to keep players on their toes.
If you don’t want to get a game over, savvy gamers need to stay focused or risk losing people they care about. Which brings me to my favorite mechanic. Choice. Player choices actually matter and affect accordingly. And even better, the player choices dictate sections of the follow-up games. This feature makes it seem like you're continuing your story vs. starting a new one every game.
The cool characters and choices you can make help to flesh out an amazing series of games. They bring the player to the forefront of the Walking Dead universe we all know and love. They allow you to experience the fear and hope that are mainstays of The Walking Dead, making a fabulous addition to the world.
