The Walking Dead: Why did Negan name his bat Lucille?
By Adam Carlson
Negan’s barbaric barbed-wire baseball bat was given a name in The Walking Dead, but why did he choose to go with the name Lucille over any other moniker?
Fans of The Walking Dead are learning a lot about Negan these days. Whether they’re just getting introduced to him on the hit AMC television show or enjoying him in the comic book series, popularity for the character is at an all time high.

Striking while the iron is hot, Image Comics made the interesting move of creating a miniseries of comics titled “Here’s Negan” which is included in the preview magazine called Image+ for the upcoming releases. In this series, fans have already learned what Negan did as a job, but now they know his barbed-wire baseball bat got its name.
According to the fourth installment of “Here’s Negan”, the story is a bit more sad than many fans would have expected.
Earlier in the series, it was revealed that Negan’s wife was diagnosed with cancer. He couldn’t handle this situation and sought refuge in bed with another woman. He called off the affair later, and even though his wife knew about the infidelity, he returned to her side in the hospital as she battled the disease.
As he sat with his wife as she was dying, outside the window of the hospital it could be seen that the zombie outbreak was beginning. Still, Negan refused to leave her side.

Finally alerting himself to the chaos around him being caused by the dead coming back to life, Negan barricaded himself in the hospital room. He returned to his wife and checked her pulse, but found nothing.
Again, Negan is distracted by the noises outside the hospital and turns his focus there. While watching some of the turmoil, he heard a noise behind him and turned around. His wife had turned into a walker, and had fallen off the bed.
With a painful look on his face, Negan tries to see if that is still his wife by calling out her name: Lucille.
Thankfully, this backstory doesn’t hurt any of the mystique around Negan and his weapon of brutal destruction. If nothing, this story paints Negan to be more of a human being who made mistakes and wanted to right wrongs, only to realize that sometimes you don’t get second chances.
