Norman Reedus Says Daryl Is Depressed Over Beth Dying

Daryl Dixon is a complicated character but in his current state of transformational vulnerability, the death of Beth is going to tremendously affect him, says Norman Reedus.

When Beth was killed in the midseason finale of The Walking Dead, it was a shocking death that still has fans reeling and wishing it weren’t true. The characters on the show haven’t been able to react to the death much yet as the incident happened during the final moments of the midseason finale, and now the show is on hiatus.

But when the show comes back on February 8, 2015, Beth’s death is going to be a driving emotional force for at least one of the main characters on the show.

Norman Reedus shared a little insight with The Hollywood Reporter this month, and among the things he noted is that Daryl is going to suffer from depression over the loss of Beth in the midseason finale.

"I think it puts him into a depression. Sophia was like hope. You remember Glenn saying, ‘This is Sophia!’ It was different. She was the bright hope of the future. It was an honest and true person."

This is hardly surprising, but it’s nice to have confirmation on the matter. Daryl is already taking Beth’s death the hardest, and the show has only elapsed a few hours in the show’s timeline up to the point we’re at now.

Things will pick up further down the road, but Daryl was emotional as soon as Beth was killed as he didn’t think twice about shooting Dawn int he face to punish her. Daryl was transforming into a softer character but that may all be out the window if his depression gets too deep in the second half of Season 5.
