5 Reasons The Nerdist’s Walking Dead Crossover Rumor Is False
By Adam Carlson
Recently, The Nerdist Network released a video that had an exclusive rumor about The Walking Dead’s 6th season and the new companion series Fear The Walking Dead.
According to Jessica Chobot on the Nerdist website, there will be a character that will appear on AMC’s The Walking Dead prior to their appearance on the companion show currently titled Fear The Walking Dead. Here’s what Chobot said in the video:
"“Our sources tell us that at least one of the characters who will be leading The Walking Dead spinoff will be appearing for a six-episode arc in Season 6 of The Walking Dead. They’ll cross paths with Team Rick in Georgia before presumably making their way toward the West Coast for the L.A.-based show.”"
While that sounds fantastic, there are some flaws in this rumor that make it hard to believe. Here are the five reasons I’m skeptical to believe this rumor:
- The Walking Dead season 6 hasn’t started production yet. Specifics about a “six episode arc” are tough to believe when the script is still in the works. It’s even possible that they haven’t started working on the script yet since filming doesn’t begin until around May. While it’s possible that script is completed through at least 6 episodes of season 6, it is highly unlikely.
- There is supposed to be no crossover. According to Robert Kirkman in a recent IGN interview, “We’ll want to tell these stories in a completely different way with completely different people in a completely different setting that’s going to make for a fundamentally different show.” Maybe “completely different” doesn’t mean what it used to.
- Why would The Walking Dead be going back to Georgia in season 6? They’re just getting out of Atlanta during season 5 and should be headed toward Wiltshire Estates and the Alexandria Safe-Zone. Backtracking just wouldn’t make sense if the show continues to follow the comic book series.
- Appearing on Walking Dead season 6 “leading up to” the companion show? If the companion character will appear on season 6 of The Walking Dead before Fear The Walking Dead premieres, that means that the spinoff wouldn’t be on TV until season 6’s midseason break or even until 2016. I can’t see them holding the spinoff off that long.
- Would a rumor that big come from anyone other than Chris Hardwick if it was Nerdist based? Let’s be honest, Chris Hardwick is an authority on The Walking Dead. Hosting Talking Dead and being a part of many of the marathons has given him reliable credibility. No offense to Jessica Chobot, but I would have been MUCH more apt to believe it from Hardwick.
What do you guys think? Do you think The Nerdist Network’s rumor holds water? Or do you think there is something a little weird with the information given? Discuss it in the comments below.
