Robert Kirkman’s Skybound Inks Film Deal With Universal
By Adam Carlson
If you’re reading on the Undead Walking website, odds are that you’re familiar with The Walking Dead. Robert Kirkman created the series based on his comic book series that has also spawned multiple video games, collectible cards, action figures, board games, a companion TV series, and much, much more.
Now, it looks as though Robert Kirkman and his publishing company of Skybound could be transitioning some of their focus from television and comics to the big screen. According to an article on The Hollywood Reporter’s website, Skybound has signed a deal with Universal to hopefully help create some films.
Before fans of The Walking Dead go crazy with speculation about a movie featuring Rick Grimes and the gang, it appears as though it will be Robert Kirkman’s other ventures that will likely be given the feature film treatment. Kirkman and Skybound are also known for other projects on the Skybound label, including The Astounding Wolf-Man, Outcast and Invincible.
In that article by The Hollywood Reporter, Robert Kirkman discussed his love for Universal:
"“In high school I watched Army of Darkness pretty much every night before bed, so I’ve seen that Universal logo steering around the planet we call home about a thousand times. The idea of producing movies that will bear that logo is just unbelievably awesome. We couldn’t find better partners than the team at Universal. I believe this partnership is going to help David and I achieve all the goals we set out to accomplish when we founded Skybound five years ago.”"
I’ve got to admit that I love Robert Kirkman even more after finding out about his love of Army of Darkness. The Evil Dead series was one of the main things that got me into the horror genre and I nearly idolized Bruce Campbell for at least two years.
Personally, I’m really excited to see what will become of this partnership between Skybound and Universal. Even if it isn’t The Walking Dead, Robert Kirkman has proven that he can toy with people’s emotions and create content that is very appealing.
Skybound’s first feature film titled “Air” is scheduled to be released on August 14, 2015 according to IMDB and stars The Walking Dead’s Norman Reedus. If that film is successful, watch for more great films from Skybound and Universal in the future due to this new partnership.
