The Walking Dead: Glenn Beck vs. Tyreese

I will admit many things right from the start of this piece: I’m not interested in politics at all. I’m very tolerant of all religious beliefs. I don’t watch the news. I hate confrontation.  I am an extremely introverted and sensitive person. I did not know who Glenn Beck was before reading the articles about his opinions about The Walking Dead. Apparently, Glenn Beck has many opinions about The Walking Dead. According to Mediaite, Beck theorizes that we know the world is in trouble and so…

"“We’re watching The Walking Dead because we know the zombies aren’t real. And so it allows us to connect with what we’re really feeling, but allows us to be in a safe zone because we know zombies aren’t real. Zombies are ISIS. Zombies is our economic peril. The rest of the show is what we say is coming.”"

Just today Salon claims Beck had a Walking Dead “freakout”.  He seemed genuinely concerned with why Americans won’t watch the ISIS videos of executions and yet they watch The Walking Dead. He mentioned that his wife won’t watch them. I feel for his wife. He hypothesized several possibilities and admitted he really doesn’t have an answer. I won’t presume to have an answer.

But being a Walking Dead fan, I will compare it to a story line from The Walking Dead. In order to do this article I did watch the video. I cried at the horror. I won’t watch another video. Tyreese talked about how his father forced him to listen to the news on the radio. To face the horrors of the world. That was the price you pay for being a good citizen. I’ve been told that many times by teachers and adults at different times in my life: keeping up with current events is the responsibility of every adult.

I was a teacher for almost 30 years. I had to be creative in finding ways to avoid looking ignorant of current events at times, but avoiding the news has helped me emotionally maintain my sanity. I won’t defend myself or go into the other ways I’ve contributed to society. I will just say, it’s the right choice for me.  So, I’m with Tyreese. I face enough in my way. Please, turn it off.

I do hope that there are people who care and can deal with the politics and big situations in the world. I am here for the little ones. I don’t watch The Walking Dead for any gore. I watch for the relationships and beauty and depth of emotion. What are your thoughts on any of these situations. I find The Walking Dead a show that has fans of many “genres” of people who cross political views, religious views, musical tastes, etc.
