Fear the Walking Dead: Reasons Not to Fear “Fear”
By Susie Graham
With Season Six so far away and Season Five becoming a distant memory, in summers past, Walking Dead fans would be waiting for the Fourth of July marathon for the next Walking Dead fix for their Walker Withdrawals. At Undeadwalking.com we’ve been trying to soothe walker fan wounds with memes on Twitter and opinion articles, news of filming for Season 6, comic-cons and scrambled word games–anything we can do to help each other through these trying walker-less times. This is my first year writing for Undead Walking, but all of a sudden I can sense a new balm: Fear the Walking Dead. A new Walking Dead? Could it be?
Reactions I’ve seen and heard have ranged from ‘can’t wait to hoping it’s great to not sure to pretty sure they’re not going to like it’. We know very little. It’s going to be set in Los Angeles and focus on families. It will not reveal the origins of the outbreak. It may eventually catch up and coincide with the current group’s time period. We know some of the actors and show runners.
Here are a few reasons I think we should not fear “Fear”: Greg Nicotero, Gale Anne Hurd and Robert Kirkman! Of course, I don’t know any of these people, but I have seen them on Talking Dead and I’ve seen their work. It seems that they wouldn’t do anything that they weren’t passionate about or proud to present. They know how to create characters we love and care about as well as characters we love to hate. The zombies should be the same zombies we know and love although back at the beginning.
Greg Nicotero should have fun playing with less decayed walkers and I can’t wait to find out what they call them. It seems that they are just as tight-lipped about this show as they are with the original, which hopefully means they are giving it equal love and care. I hope Gale Anne Hurd puts her stamp on the characters. I would think Robert Kirkman wouldn’t want his comic associated with something sub-par and I would hope that this is a fun project for him after moving from comic to TV and now to TV without a direct comic source. They’ve also stuck with hiring top quality actors that aren’t huge names that would distract from the story. And actors that will hopefully embrace the Walking Dead fandom/con experience.
I really hope Fear the Walking Dead turns out to be a great experience for Walking Dead fans and for a brand new set of fans. Are you excited? Do you trust it will be great? Are you fearful? Are you not even going to try it?
