Fear The Walking Dead: There Will Be No Zombie Origin Story
By Adam Carlson
The Walking Dead has been very quiet about the origins of the zombie outbreak and according to an interview that The Hollywood Reporter did with Fear The Walking Dead’s showrunner Dave Erickson, it doesn’t sound as though fans of the series will get that information in the companion series either.
During the interview, THR asked Erickson the following question: “Kirkman has said the origin of the outbreak is something he’s never going to reveal in the comics or the flagship series. Is that true here, too?”
Here is what Ericksen said:
"“I had a couple of early pitches that touched on what you’re referring to and Robert shut me down. For him, it’s never been about what caused it; it’s always been about the impact it has on people. Robert’s always said — and this is what we try to anchor Fear in is: Your parents got divorced or there are zombies. You didn’t get invited to the prom, or there are zombies.”"
Don’t get me wrong. I love zombies as much as the next guy. Their mere presence can set off chains of horror and disaster. But finding out what happened to create these mindless flesh consumers is something that I’ve always hoped that we’d find out.
Ever since the season 1 finale of The Walking Dead when Dr. Noah Emmerich said that there was a facility in France that he felt was close to making a discovery about the origin of the outbreak, I’ve remained hopeful that the information would eventually come along. At this point in The Walking Dead, it’s far to late to worry about containment where learning the beginnings of the disease isn’t very useful.
However, on a show like Fear The Walking Dead, this is something that could really help the story move forward and help separate it from The Walking Dead. But it is also worth noting that The Walking Dead has remained hugely successful despite not knowing how it all began and the same can be done for Fear The Walking Dead.
