Is ‘Fear The Walking Dead’ Just A ‘Sappy Spin-Off’?
By Adam Carlson
It’s been well known that Fear The Walking Dead will be a show that is set in the same universe as the show it spun off of, The Walking Dead. However, expecting the two shows to be extremely similar from the beginning might be a huge mistake.
With the recent interview that said that Fear The Walking Dead will be focusing on the relationships between the characters, some people are jumping to conclusions that the show will be nothing but a sappy drama with a couple walkers sprinkled in here and there.
And while that could be true, sappy relationships are primarily the story on AMC’s hit show The Walking Dead as well. Whether it’s Rick Grimes trying to reunite with him family, Glenn’s love story with Maggie or trying to figure out if Daryl and Carol are an item, relationships are the driving force behind the hit zombie show.
The big difference between The Walking Dead and Fear The Walking Dead should be the frequency and number of walkers. But as we’ve learned from the past episodes of The Walking Dead, sometimes it’s that one walker that you don’t hear coming or that you don’t expect that ends up killing the character or getting a big bite out of someone. Plus, when the people on the show don’t know what a walker is, it will be interesting to see how they react to the undead.
Recently, an article on the Vanity Fair website poised a question that I couldn’t help but answer:
"“So what do you think Walking Dead fans? Will a sappy love story with fresh-faced zombies suck you in? Or will you sit this one out and wait for the original series to return in the fall?”"
I think fans would be doing Robert Kirkman and the cast and crew of Fear The Walking Dead a disservice if they were to dismiss the new companion show as a disposable attempt to cash in on the huge audience that The Walking Dead has built over its five successful seasons. They should at least give the show a chance to stand on its own merits before being labeled as a sappy drama with a couple zombies.
I know I’ll be tuned in to Fear The Walking Dead this summer. Will you?
