The Walking Dead’s Season 5 ‘Most Tweeted’ Premiere
By Adam Carlson
If you’re a fan of The Walking Dead who isn’t watching the show as it initially airs on AMC, you best stay off social media unless you don’t mind spoilers. Sure, there were incidents of AMC slipping up and accidentally posting about the death of a major character before it aired on the west coast, but it’s fans of The Walking Dead that seem to be especially keen about using Twitter while the show is airing.
In fact, The Walking Dead’s season 5 premiere episode was the most tweeted premiere of any series this television season according to Nielsen. That’s a huge achievement for the hit AMC zombie drama as well as the rabid fan base of the show, who were likely hungry for any kind of walker action they could get following the long break between season 4 and season 5.
Nielsen estimates that 1.3 million tweets were sent out during The Walking Dead’s season 5 premiere. To put that in perspective, approximately the same number of tweets were sent out regarding Saturday Night Live’s 40th Anniversary Special that was a huge special event that involved numerous celebrities and ran for three and a half hours not including the “red carpet” special introduction show.
Huge congratulations go out to AMC’s The Walking Dead on being such a popular program that has fans glued to both the television screen and social media to get the most out of their viewing experience. As usual, I’ll be on the Undead Walking Twitter account during episodes of The Walking Dead and Fear The Walking Dead when new episodes air to live tweet.
Hopefully, with your help, we can shatter the 1.3 million tweet mark with The Walking Dead’s season 6 premiere this fall on AMC.
