The Walking Dead has created many characters that fans of the show have learned to either love or hate.  Father Gabriel is one of those that seems to have a lot more people shouting for his death than cheering his merits recently.

Sure, he’s not good at fighting the undead.  He’s made a lot of mistakes in the past and even badmouthed his own group to the leader of Alexandria in hopes of having them exiled.  But there are other times that we’ve seen Gabriel step up a bit.

Father Gabriel has recently been more willing to engage with walkers and has been letting some of the survivors into his life.  However, his struggle has been well documented through the end of The Walking Dead’s fifth season.  So what is next for Gabriel going into the show’s sixth season?

Let’s take a look into the comic books to see what Father Gabriel could have in store for him during season 6.

***WARNING: Comic and potential TV spoilers below***

It doesn’t take long in the comics before the walls of the Alexandria Safe-Zone come tumbling down and the survivors are looking for a safe place to hide from the undead.  There are several people looking to escape into Father Gabriel’s church, but the man of the cloth is sobbing and hesitates to let them in.  After taking a moment to compose himself, he lets both Eugene and Nicholas into the building just moments before a group of walkers close in.

Later on, Father Gabriel actually joins in with Rick and Michonne to fight the horde of undead that breached the wall in Alexandria.  At first, he’s timid and fearful to begin taking the walkers out, but eventually, with the help of the other survivors, he dispatches of several zombies.

Father Gabriel is left dumbfounded by his own actions.  In a short period of time, he’s made a brand new decision to be a more helpful, productive, and capable member of the community on The Walking Dead.

Could this be a new version of Father Gabriel on The Walking Dead?  Or should the hit AMC show continue to make him struggle with his faith and interpersonal skills since the fan base already seems to dislike him so much?  Let me know what you think in the comments below.
