Fear The Walking Dead Offers ‘Zero Woods’ During Season 1
By Adam Carlson
Sometimes, news that might seem obvious is some of the best information that can come along. And that’s exactly the case when Robert Kirkman dropped some information about Fear The Walking Dead’s first season in a recent interview on Entertainment Weekly’s website.
We knew that Fear The Walking was going to be set in Los Angeles. L.A. is known for many things, Hollywood, the Lakers, and shopping, but I never stopped to think that at least during the initial stages of the show that one major thing would be absent: the woods.
"“Yeah, we’ll definitely be spending a lot less time in the woods,” Kirkman says. “I can say I think we’re not in the woods at all. Yeah, I am pretty sure we are in zero woods this season.”"
It’s not hard to believe that there won’t be a wooded area this year. Although I’ve never personally visited Los Angeles, or even California for that matter, I wouldn’t anticipate there being much undeveloped land in the city. The lack of forestation in the series, at least during the initial stages, could echo The Walking Dead’s first season which featured a lot of time in Atlanta as well as suburban areas, but never quite featured a lot of woods except near the RV camp outside the city.
Fear The Walking Dead will likely see even less woods than that. So far, all the previews that we’ve seen offered a lot of pavement and concrete instead of grass and trees. And that kind of environment could we a welcomed change from recent seasons of The Walking Dead, which had the survivors out among nature for quite a while.
"“The urban sprawl—it covers a tremendous amount of land, and it’s got an extremely dense population, so there are a lot of things about that that lend itself well to good storytelling in the zombie apocalypse. But also, this is a city where a vast number of people come to the city to reinvent themselves, or they’re new to the city for various different reasons. It’s almost a city of immigrants inside a country of immigrants. So there’s definitely some aspects of that we’ll also be playing with as well.”"
It is that kind of setting that could provide very interesting and different characters and situations from The Walking Dead. Hopefully, Robert Kirkman and the show’s cast and crew can be able to create a dynamic world that gives a different experience from the ones that we’ve already had.
We’ll find out if Fear The Walking Dead can meet our expectations this summer on AMC.
