The Walking Dead Season 5: Is Melissa McBride Emmy Worthy?

One of the most interesting and dynamic characters on AMC’s The Walking Dead is Carol Peletier.  We’ve known her since the first season of the hit zombie survival drama and have witnessed her grow into a strong, independent character.

Played on the show by the lovely and talented Melissa McBride, Carol has become a fan favorite on the series.  Her character is one that we never know what to expect from next.  In the past, I’ve pushed for Melissa McBride to win awards for her work as Carol, and this year, Dave Nemetz from Yahoo.com feels that Carol should be recognized for her efforts during The Walking Dead’s fifth season with an Emmy nomination.

However, I’m not sure I agree with that.  While Carol had some interesting moments on the show, including the takedown of Terminus and her handling of Jessie’s son in Alexandria, I never got the emotional feeling or enjoyment of character growth that happened during season 5.  Maybe it was the power of “The Grove” when Carol was forced to deal with troubled young Lizzie Samuels or her exile from the main group after doing necessary, but unpopular things

If McBride were to win an award for her work on The Walking Dead, it should have been for her season 4 efforts.  She was magnificent during that season.  Although she was good in season 5, I would feel as though an Emmy nod at this point would be more of a “make-up” type decision than one based on the merits from this season.

Maybe I’m just being a tough judge on Carol during season 5 of The Walking Dead and unfairly comparing it to what I felt was an award-worthy performance during season 4, but I’m just not sure a nomination or win at the Emmy Awards would sit right with me at this point.
