The most recent promotional video for Fear The Walking Dead raises some great questions about the theme of the upcoming companion show.  While much of the emphasis of interviews has focused on the characters and the setting of the new show, some of the themes could play just as big of roles as some of the actors.

Although the clip doesn’t reveal much, it did provide us with a conversation between a student at the school and Madison (played by the lovely Kim Dickens) about some weird stuff that he’s been seeing on the internet.  He talks about “reports in five states” about something that could be a “virus or microbe” that is spreading and causing people to kill.

Madison quickly dismisses his claims and figures that he’s just worked up about what he’s reading online.  She goes as far as suggesting that he needs to spend more time away from the computer.  She also tells him that if there were a major epidemic going on, that they’d have announcements from the government and other sources warning people about the problem.

Themes and plot lines like the role of authority seem to be a huge play in Fear The Walking Dead.  Not only do we have Madison dismissing the student’s claim, but she also seems to have a lot of faith in her government and the media to be honest and forward about the issues going on.

As we could probably guess, the young man knows what he’s talking about.

So, what will happen since this kid has come forward with his concerns?  Will they be brushed under the rug by Madison?  Will she slowly begin to believe him when things begin to crumble around her?  And how long will it take for her to realize that sometimes her government and media aren’t always the best source for information?

Questions like these should be huge themes during Fear The Walking Dead’s six episode first season.  The questioning of authority, disbelief in others, and strong egos of people in authority should make for an interesting clash even if a walker doesn’t even appear on the screen.

Fear The Walking Dead is set to premiere this August on AMC.
