Wendy, The Walking Dead Woodburner
By Susie Graham
The Walking Dead has inspired creativity and art of all kinds. Woodburning, also called pyrography, is an interesting art that is new to me. I’ve recently found two woodburning artists on Twitter and I’ve asked them to share a little bit about themselves and their art.
The first one is Wendy. Wendy is 37 years old and from the Netherlands. She has a husband, two daughters and works as a nurse in a retirement home. Woodburning caught her attention about ten years ago and she bought a second-hand burner. But it was at the beginning of this year that woodburning began calling her back and got that burner out of the closet and dusted off!
She had studied videos on YouTube and practiced and tried new techniques. She tried portraits of Johnny Depp and Bob Marley before her Walking Dead portraits came to life, after her nephew got her hooked on the show making sure she started back at the beginning and didn’t just watch reruns from different seasons.
"When I’m burning I lose all control about time and place. I get in some kind of trance and forget everything around me. It happens a lot that I finish something and it’s in the middle of the night."
Wendy is very humble and modest about her talent. She confesses to insecurity but also to being proud of her work. She has some commissioned work in the US and Canada, which makes her proud. She wants to make her work affordable for fans. Portraits are $40 plus shipping and sometimes raffled off on her Facebook page.
Be sure to check out her page and more of her work! You can also find her on Twitter!
