Fear the Walking Dead is scheduled to premiere on August 23rd on AMC and fans are finally starting to get excited. Many people wonder how Fear will be different from the original to make it unique.  It has been emphasized that it’s going to be about the family and the people. But I think the similarities and the things they are doing that mirror the original The Walking Dead are some of the smartest moves they are making. Here’s what I mean.

  • The people: Yes! It’s about the people. That’s not really a difference.  The original is about the people, too. How many times do you hear people argue to non-fans, “it’s not about zombies; it’s about people and how they survive and deal with the end of the world with the zombies.”
  • Posters: Walking Dead fans love their posters! The poster art for Fear has been fantastic and they’ve been releasing it slowly to build excitement.
  • Stars: They’ve filled the cast with great actors. Some known, but none such mega-stars that they will distract from the story. And all, hopefully, keenly aware of what they are getting into as far as the Walking Dead family and fandom and Comic-Con and Twitter culture.
  • Catch phrases: They’ve already created some great ones for Fear, comparable to ‘Those who arrive survive’ and ‘Hunt or be hunted’. We have ‘Fear begins here.’ and ‘When civilization ends, it ends fast.’ And hopefully,  Fear will create its own spontaneous catchphrases to rival ‘stuff and thangs’ and ‘look at the flowers’.
  • Walkers and walker rules: We’re excited to see the same walkers and walker rules in the same outbreak just a different location.
  • Greg Nicotero,  Gale Anne Hurd,  Robert Kirkman: Boom.
  • 6 episode first season: This creates an almost mini-series or movie feel for the first season.

Suspense, excitement, secrets, jaw dropping moments, walkers, people we care about, life, death, morality, difficult decisions. They can try to focus on the ways it will be different all they want. I’m grateful for all the ways it’s the same!
