Fear The Walking Dead: an open letter from Robert Kirkman
By Adam Carlson
Less than a month remains until the premiere of Fear The Walking Dead on AMC. Because of that, anticipation for the show is hitting an all time high.
This is a fantastic opportunity for fans to get a new look at the zombie apocalypse in the world that Robert Kirkman created. We’ll meet new survivors, see them put into different situations, and view things from the beginning of the outbreak, a time that we’ve only got to see in The Walking Dead’s video games up until this point.
So what does that mean for Fear The Walking Dead? Well, Robert Kirkman outlined just how they intend to make the show a success in an open letter on AMC.com. From the sound of things, the strategy that helped him succeed with The Walking Dead will remain intact for the new program.
Here is the letter from Robert Kirkman (click for full size):
Just as I had hoped, Fear The Walking Dead is all about the characters. If the letter above is difficult to read, here is the major highlight of the address:
"“The Walking Dead has always been about the characters” Kirkman wrote. “Now we get to introduce you to Madison, Travis, Alicia, Nick, Liza, Chris, Daniel, Ofelia and well… the cast continues to grow each episode… and yes… we do lose a few along the way. But where the “exciting” and “new” comes in… is that these people have their own experiences and reasons to survive. They’re complicated, real characters who will not be dealing with the undead the same way. They’ll learn new things, they’ll find new tools, they’ll learn faster or slower but what we end up with is a very, VERY different show… set in a world we LOVE exploring as much as we’d all NEVER want to live there.”"
We are so close to meeting all these characters that it is starting to get exciting. If Fear The Walking Dead can come close to developing these new survivors the way that they did during AMC’s The Walking Dead, fans are in for a real treat.
Personally, I can’t wait for August 23, 2015. I have the date circled on my calendar and Robert Kirkman’s words in this open letter have me even more excited about the series premiere. While there is a chance that this series could be a huge letdown, I’m willing to lower my walls and give Fear The Walking Dead a real chance to drag me in.
If nothing else, it’s a nice taste of the undead during the break between seasons of The Walking Dead, right?
