The Walking Dead: You’re not alone, Spencer
By Susie Graham
Spencer Monroe has lost his entire family now in Alexandria. But as we’ve seen in The Walking Dead, family takes on new meaning in the apocalypse. He found out he still has family.
Spencer has lost his dad and his brother and most recently his mother Deanna. Michonne saw him wandering alone in the woods with a shovel. When I saw him kill a walker, at first I thought that he was practicing to become more skilled at walker killing after the stand in Alexandria.

When it became clear that Carl was leading Walker Deanna to Spencer because he wanted Spencer to be the one to put his mother down just as Carl had done with his own mother, the story took a beautiful turn.
Spencer wanted to do it by himself. He wanted to have a private experience with his mother. This was a valid wish. And Michonne, just being Michonne, gave him just that without leaving him.
She didn’t talk, but she held Deanna in such a way that Spencer didn’t have to fight his Walker mother to kill her. He was able to look at her. Her second death was peaceful. Spencer was able to stab her from behind the head and gently fall with his mother in his arms.

Then after it was over, he wasn’t alone anymore. Michonne was there to listen. Spencer was able to talk about the note he received from his mother and share his thoughts about her with Michonne.
Spencer got more than most people in the apocalypse. He got his private moment, he got a letter from his mother, and he got a beautiful little funeral.
Once the funeral was over he had someone there to catch him. Many of our survivors had nobody and went through terrible, crazy times before they found their new world family.
Spencer will still have to grieve in his own way, but he has support. His support even knows his lost family so when he shares his memories, they know who he’s grieving and they miss those people, too.
Spencer is not alone anymore. He has family in Alexandria. He has people looking out for him and people giving him space. Carl and Michonne are two great people to add to your family.
