The Walking Dead Survival Rule of The Week
By Liam O'Leary
Another week of The Walking Dead, another lesson to be learned about what you should (Or should not) do to survive a zombie apocalypse.
After watching the foolishness that ensued on last night’s episode of The Walking Dead, I was compelled to tackle this rule. I can only watch so many people run off half-cocked into God only knows what before I have to say something.
Rule #54: Proceed with CAUTION
In the zombie apocalypse, threats, whether living or dead, are everywhere, and just because you can’t see them doesn’t mean they aren’t there. Often, all it takes is for a person to clumsily stumble into their vicinity for them to attack.
Let’s look at Carol, for example. As much I love Carol, she should have known that, after the run-ins The Group’s been having with The Saviors as of late, that there was a good chance they may be lying in wait.
Sure enough, as she attempts to get away from the community, she (And her Mad Max car) run into a Saviors welcoming committee, all of them armed and, worse still, all of them aware of Alexandria’s location.
::SPOILER ALERT:: (IN FACT, MUCH OF THE REST OF THIS HAS SPOILERS, SO…)
Obviously, Carol came out of this (At least as far as we saw) unscathed, but, the fact remains, in the current political climate Alexandria now finds itself in, Carol should have been more careful when she attempted to flee, if she had, she might have been able to avoid having to kill more people (Which she adamantly wants to do).
Of course, Carol was absolutely NOT the only person to drive off into God only knows what in last night’s episode, as it seemed like EVERYONE decided to do just that.
First, Daryl rides off, trying to get to where Denise was killed, in an attempt to track down Dwight and his team, then, Michonne, Glenn, and Rosita follow him, trying to stop him, THEN, Rick and Morgan go out, in an attempt to catch up to Carol!
…Only Rick returns to Alexandria.
And why? BECAUSE EVERYONE WENT RUNNING AROUND IN THE DAMNED WOODS!! THAT’S WHY!!!!!!
…Seriously. This is a textbook example of why this rule is necessary. After chasing Daryl into the woods, Michonne and Glenn get ambushed by Dwight’s subordinates.
Then, Daryl, in an attempt to rescue them, gets snuck up on by Dwight…and SHOT!
I can’t make this anymore plain: In a zombie apocalypse, you can’t go rushing off into a situation without checking to make sure it’s safe to do so, because, if you don’t, you’ll just end up either getting trapped by zombies, or ambushed by people!
Yes, Daryl obviously wanted to rescue Michonne and Glenn, but, by rushing in to get them, he fell right into Dwight’s trap, and got at least badly wounded for his troubles. Now, The Saviors have at least three vital members of The Group captive, while more still are out roaming the wilderness of Eastern Virginia by themselves!

In a zombie apocalypse, you can’t just charge headlong into a situation. Between zombies roaming around and hostile people lurking behind every corner, running into things half-cocked is a recipe for disaster. All it takes is one bad decision for you to get yourself, and maybe even a large portion of your group, trapped in a situation that you may not be able to get yourself out of, and maybe even get all you killed!
This is why you need to proceed with caution. This is why you need to think carefully about what you’re going to do. This is why you need to scout the area you’re going to run into, to make sure that there aren’t any threats waiting to ambush you. This is why you must follow…THE RULES.
