Michael Rooker may have played Merle in The Walking Dead, but he may be returning as Mr. Svenning in a follow-up to Kevin Smith’s masterpiece Mallrats.

It has been 21 years since Kevin Smith’s film Mallrats hit theatres. The comedy helped establish Smith as a director and opened doors for many actors. One actor who benefited from the exposure in the cult-classic was Michael Rooker.

Since then, Rooker has gone on to do great things. Not only is he well-known for his role as Merle Dixon on The Walking Dead, but he plays the major part of Yondu in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. Now, he will may to the mall one more time as Mr. Svenning to help protect his daughter Brandi from the slacker TS.

Recently, Kevin Smith stopped by the Preston and Steve radio show on 93.3 WMMR to discuss his project Yoga Hosers, but instead dropped  a bombshell on listeners by confirming that Mallrats 2 was in the works, but maybe not in a way that people were expecting.

"“It is happening. It’s taking us a longer time to build it, but what we did was reconfigured it.” Smith said. “I went and directed an episode of The Flash, and when I went up there, it was kind of a weird game changer for my career. I felt at home in the medium.”"

The idea of Mallrats 2 being a television series instead of a movie sequel is an interesting one. However, it shouldn’t change the fact that a property very close to the hearts of many fans is returning, and bringing key pieces like Michael Rooker with it could help make it a big hit.

"“We started reconfiguring the idea of doing Mallrats not as a film but as a series, and Universal and I are just about to close our deal to do Mallrats the series. Then we take it out into the world and find a home for it. So, instead of doing a Mallrats movie, I’m going to do 10 episodes of a Mallrats series.””"

To help get fans interested in the project, Kevin Smith tweeted a photo of himself with the actor from The Walking Dead, Stan Lee and Jason Mewes seemingly on board.

CinemaBlend.com says that Rooker is confirmed to the project, along with Kevin Smith, Jason Mewes, Stan Lee and Shannen Doherty. Hopefully, the continuation of the Mallrats franchise can keep the magic and fun of the film going and be a winner for Smith as well as Rooker.
