Season 7 of The Walking Dead won’t be just about Negan. Greg Nicotero made sure we know that the zombies are still around even with Negan and the Saviors.

IGN talked to Greg Nicotero about Negan and his effect on season 7 of The Walking Dead. As far as spoilers go, Nicotero mentioned that they may not be filming things in order.

Nicotero acknowledged that Negan is a game changer as has been established by comments from many of the actors and from Kirkman. And he understands frustration with the cliffhanger yet reasons it’s a natural breaking point.

"It propels our people. It affects our people profoundly, as it does in the comic book. That changes everyone’s direction. The main thing about Season 7 is establishing that the world isn’t what everybody thinks it is, the world out there. At the end of Season 6, Rick was so confident. ‘We’re just going to knock out that outpost, we’re going to f–k these guys up before they f–k us up,’ and it ends with him going, ‘Heh, oh well, I had no idea. What I perceived as the world is not even close to what the reality of the world is,’ and Negan’s there to show him that.”"

I was very pleased to read that the walkers are not taking a complete backseat to the human threats and warfare. The zombies are the cause of everything that has occurred. Society has crumbled because of the walkers. They are important. They need to be there.

They present that constant stress. You can’t relax because there may be a walker somewhere. It’s different from a natural disaster that has ended and created conditions where you are without electricity or food. The walkers need to be a constant threat. It’s good to have someone like Nicotero who has such a love and care for the walkers involved in the show to make sure that happens.

"It’s always about keeping the walkers present. Especially if you have a great villain like Negan, you still have to have the walkers be present, otherwise you’re taking away one aspect of the show, and it’s an important aspect of it. So the drama is still there, and the drama basically is the interweaving of the good guys and the bad guys. It’s the cowboys and the bad guy coming into the one-horse town. That’s what The Walking Dead is. It’s always important to keep the walkers relevant in the show. That’s why the gags that come up, if there’s an episode that doesn’t have a ton of walkers, there’ll be some awesome gags in it that you’ll just be blown away by. I came up with a couple this year that we’ll be shooting next week that we’ve never done before, and I was like, ‘Oh, this is going to be cool.'”I go where I try to push myself to come up with effects that don’t need visual effects, but you would expect it to be a visual effect when you look at it,”"

I can’t wait to try to figure out during the season in October and November just what gag or effect he is talking about when it happens! I hope I can see it and recognize it.

Next: Keep the zombies in my zombie show!

Last season the walkers were quite decomposed with lots of ribcage and skeletal features exposed. I will be excited to see the new photos in July when they start to release key art at Comic Con and on the website.
