Great Character Introductions on The Walking Dead: Michonne
By Susie Graham
We only meet a character once. Sometimes that introduction is just woven into the story. Other times it’s a dramatic event. Let’s look at some of the great introductions on The Walking Dead.
Michonne. Michonne had the best silent introduction of a character ever! We never saw her face. And it wasn’t even Danai Gurira at the time. Her true introduction was just stunning.
A hooded, sword weilding woman with walker pets on chains who swooped in to save our Andrea who had been chased off the burning farm by walkers and unable to catch up with the group who had to drive off the farm.
Silhouettes in the night woods. Mysterious. Mystical. Mythical. Miraculous. Michonne.
It’s the very end of season 2. Andrea is in the woods on the ground backing up in a crab walk with a walker after her. She’s fighting it off, but she’s exhausted from running and we can’t imagine she will be able to get him in the brain.
Out of nowhere the walker’s head is sliced and we see the cloaked figure shake the brains and skin and blood off of her sword. We see the walkers chained to her.

We see Andrea look into her hood and all we see is black shadow. We wonder right along with Andrea who this mysterious person is. Is she a friend? Where did she come from? Why did she help? At least we know Andrea is alive!
Michonne’s second “introduction” wasn’t as mysterious. She became more real. We find her with Andrea in the little shack and Andrea is eating soup. We know now that the cloaked woman is a friend and we learn more about her.

As an introduction to a character Michonne’s is pretty amazing. No words. No face. No name.
Her character lives up to that amazing introduction.
