The Walking Dead: Laurie Holden’s exit was bittersweet

Actress Laurie Holden did a great job as Andrea on The Walking Dead, but her early exit compared to the comic book series left a bittersweet taste to fans.

One of the biggest differences from the pages of The Walking Dead’s comic book series compared to the popular AMC television show is Andrea. In the comics, Andrea is Rick’s main squeeze and is still alive to help out Alexandria. On the show, that isn’t the case.

Following a relationship with The Governor, AMC killed of Andrea in a surprising fashion. With fans of the comic books stunned by her early exit, it was recently revealed in a panel at Walker Stalker Con in New Jersey that the actress to play Andrea, named Laurie Holden, had signed an 8 season deal with the show when signing on to the project.

Sadly, things like this seem to happen all the time with television. An actor getting a long-term deal to play an important character is a common occurrence, but it doesn’t always work out well. Sometimes, it is drug issues, injuries or death that forces a character out of a plot. Sometimes, the actor themselves requests to be removed. But there is one other case that is more rare.

In Andrea’s situation, there is no beating around the bush. Fans of the AMC zombie drama just plain did not like the character. With that going on, the problems with the show’s management, and uncertain direction for the series, the former plans were scrapped and Andrea met her doom in Woodbury.

"“I was supposed to be there until the end. I was supposed to end up with Rick. I was supposed to save Woodbury on a horse.”"

While Holden is disappointed she isn’t around to keep battling the zombies on The Walking Dead, she is still a fan of the series and really enjoys the direction it has taken since her departure.

"“I think The Walking Dead is in a really good place now with Scott Gimple. It wasn’t the ship that it is now. I’m very grateful how it was written that I went out with grace and with a stellar cast. It wasn’t the way that I wanted but I loved the way I went out.”"
