Robert Kirkman has found immense success with The Walking Dead, but going back home to Cynthiana, Kentucky always reminds him of where he came from.

For a man who wasn’t allowed to watch scary shows as a child, Robert Kirkman has created a juggernaut of a franchise in The Walking Dead. Spanning two television shows, a comic book, video games, toy lines and much, much more.

Through all of the success of The Walking Dead, the small city of Cynthiana, Kentucky might be the biggest inspiration for his success. So, when the city itself decided to honor Kirkman and artist Tony Moore during The Walking Dead Day, Kirkman made it a point be there and take part in as many events as possible.

WKYT TV sat down with Robert Kirkman to discuss Cynthiana, his ties to the city, and, of course, The Walking Dead:

One of the first things Kirkman talks about in the video is the beautiful mural painted across a number of building featuring characters from the hit AMC television show. He said that it is still weird to look at this phenomenon and realize that he is the man responsible for it all.

"“I see the mural, it’s really cool. It’s hard to go, ‘Oh, that is something that I created’ that is very strange, but it’s nice it feels good,” Kirkman said."

But his love for the town of Cynthiana was a big motivator for the success of The Walking Dead. The hometown of Rick Grimes in the comic book was the same hometown for him growing up, as he wanted to relate the story as close to real life has he could in order to draw in the common fan.

"“I have fond memories of going to Vanhook’s Hardware and eating at Leono’s. It’s just a cool town.”"

Robert Kirkman and his wife buying beautiful home to convert into a bed and breakfast in Cynthiana continues to show just how much the city means to him and how his mind and efforts never stop.
