The Walking Dead’s comic book series left Dwight in a very awkward position when it comes to Rick Grimes and the former leader of The Saviors, Negan.

There aren’t many people in the world of The Walking Dead who like Negan. Despite a fun personality and being a more than capable survivor, he’s done some horrible things with The Saviors in the past and hasn’t made many friends since he was introduced in issue 100 of the comic book series.

But there are characters with extra motivation to hate him. Immediately, characters like Maggie Greene come to mind, as it was Negan himself who based Glenn’s brains in over 50 episodes ago. However, Negan not only took the love of Dwight’s life but deformed him for life with a hot iron to the face.

So, after Negan escaped from his jail cell in Alexandria, hunted down Alpha, and returned to Alexandria with her head, Rick’s decision to let Negan stay out of the cage in issue 157 of The Walking Dead isn’t sitting well with Dwight…and that only compounded when Rick asked Dwight to keep an eye on Negan in case he tries something fishy.

But this might not be the best idea. In fact, Dwight was part of the group that spotted Negan coming from the territory of The Whisperers and gave some rather harsh commands to Magna about what they should have done with him.

Dwight’s animosity toward Negan while watching him will be a true test for his loyalty to Rick Grimes. There is no question that he still holds a major grudge against Negan for what has happened in the past and would love to see Negan dead, but he also trusts and respects Rick Grimes enough not to just shoot Negan and make up a story about him plotting some nefarious scheme.

In the past, Dwight has been very vocal about not wanting to be a leader to other survivors, but that doesn’t mean he shies away from difficult tasks…and Rick may have just given him his most challenging one yet and hopefully that story develops in future issues of The Walking Dead.
