Fear the Walking Dead: Tension between Madison and Alicia
By Susie Graham
Fear the Walking Dead returns for the second half of season 2 with Madison and Alicia together without Nick, which causes tension between the two again.
Nick Clark demanded attention from Madison even before the apocalypse hit. His addiction and his running away caused tension in the family. Alicia loved her brother, but she learned to let go of him a little better than Madison could.
Alicia learned to plan to create a better life for herself. She did well in school and had plans to go off to college and gain some independence from her mother, something most teenagers do.
Alicia’s independence was put on hold when the infected came along. She enjoyed the company of her brother once again as her family was together fighting, but Nick became the focus once again. Alicia suffered from a “good kid” thing. You don’t have to worry about the good kid so she doesn’t get much attention.
Alycia Debnam-Carey spoke with Variety about the tension between Madison and Alicia coming up in the back half of season 2 of Fear the Walking Dead:
"“Alicia starts to take control and think what’s important is what’s in front of you. Their dynamic has been filled with tension for a long time, because of the fact that Nick has been running off, and fueled by Travis becoming part of the family, and the two of them finally come head-to-head.”"
Madison wants to look for Nick and it seems like Alicia realizes that things are about survival now and they have bigger issues to attend to if they want to create a life in the new world.
"“They’re both focusing on different things. For Madison it’s for everyone to be together and be safe while Alicia [is] adapting to this new world and it’s about how to actually survive with what’s in front of them and with what they have … They’re both strong characters, and it leads to a lot of tension.”"
With Strand and Ofelia in the same “boat” as Madison and Alicia, it should be interesting to see how they develop as a little group and if they meet new people. Madison will need to help Alicia and Ofelia grow into leaders and independent women instead of trying to boss them around and bicker with Strand.
Next: What's next for all the Fear characters?
It will be interesting to see if Madison becomes a mini-Abraham or if she can open up and become a warrior and leader more like Michonne. Fear the Walking Dead explores new territory with more of the characters knowing each other better before the crazy hit.
