Issue 158 picks up right where the previous one left off. Gabriel is making his way to the top of the tower when he spots the massive horde of undead with The Whisperers making their way to Alexandria.

Panicked, Gabriel slips off the ladder and his leg got caught between two rungs. His right leg snaps and he is left hanging there are as the walkers close in. Beta says “I will help you. I release you” and proceeds to disembowel him. Then, walkers surround him and devour Gabriel.

Over at the Sanctuary, Vincent from Alexandria has arrived to ask for help in the war. Not only is Vincent denied a single person from the community, but they take his horse and send him on his way, saying that Dwight and Rick are allies, but they, as a whole, are not.

Rick seems to have motivated the people of Alexandria, but Eugene is having trouble keeping his secret radio conversations to himself. Rick trusts Eugene, and says that he can fill him in on the “secret project” whenever he is ready.

Over at The Kingdom, they are concerned they sent too much help to Alexandria and left themselves undermanned. Zachary voices his displeasure for the situation, but William shuts him down immediately, threatening to send him to the frontlines to fight.

In the battlefield, Negan is pestering Dwight for a gun. The topic of Sherry creates a sore spot between the two, but then activity is spotted on the horizon. Dwight says that it can’t be because Gabriel hasn’t radioed contact.  However, after a look through the binoculars, Dwight confirms The Whisperers are approaching.

Beta is spearheading this group, which starts attacking. They start taking out many survivors, and Negan sees this as an opportunity to grab a gun. With a walker on him, a gunshot takes it out and allows Negan to retreat.

Mostly surrounded, Dwight’s group is in trouble. Thankfully, Magna’s and her people arrive on the scene to help take some of the pressure off them. Negan is firing at The Whisperers and walkers, saying to Dwight that he should trust him.

Taking out another soldier, Beta continues to approach. More help comes in, with The Kingdom taking on the horde, but The Whisperers numbers and power are overwhelming.

At The Hilltop, Carl is keeping watch while Lydia keeps him company. Earl is holding down shop at the blacksmith shop, but Eugene makes his appearance there, stating he will help to increase the ammunition production.

Aaron isn’t waiting to heal up to 100%. He’s already up and moving around, saying that he needs to pace a bit. Meanwhile, Pete and Siddiq are discussing going to help out the survivors against The Whisperers. Pete decides to stay behind, but asks that Siddiq return as soon as the war is over.

The Sanctuary confirms that they have no interest in helping out Rick and the other communities. When confronted with the idea of The Whisperers coming for them next, they decided they will let them come.

Jesus asks Michonne how much she knows about Aaron. Michonne makes a sly face and says that he will make a lot of people happy. Jesus just wants to make it out of this situation alive first.

After riding over a hill, Michonne and Jesus reach the battle. They spring into action, taking out walkers left and right. But it all seems to be futile, as a the massive number of undead and members of The Whisperers seem unbeatable.

Casualties continue to pile up, but Beta has found Dwight. Beta seems to be in position to hurt or kill Dwight, but out of nowhere Negan hits him with the butt of his gun and knocks him down. Negan says that he will kill Beta, but the issue comes to an end.
