The Walking Dead’s Jeffrey Dean Morgan shares his ‘sweet’ story
By Susie Graham
The Walking Dead’s Jeffrey Dean Morgan tells the story of how he came to be the co-owner of Samuel’s Sweet Shop in New York with his friend Paul Rudd.
The Walking Dead’s Negan owns a candy store!
Samuel’s Sweet Shop of Rhinebeck, New York was opened by Ira Gutner in 1994. It was his dream job. He owned the store for 20 years after leaving his career in the Garment District. He named the store after his uncle Sam.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan, had become friends with Ira and when Ira died in 2014, Jeffrey and his friend, actor Paul Rudd decided to buy the shop.
From the pictures on Facebook and Twitter, it’s a charming, and nostalgic place filled with tempting treats and a warm, casual atmosphere. There’s a red-painted wood bench in front. Red and sky-blue paint trim the brick building. A variety of flowers fill a red wagon around back and a white-painted door leaned against the brick serves as a trellis.
"Please visit us in the charming little town of Rhinebeck, N.Y! We love meeting our customers, from wide-eyed “little” kids awed by our colorful sweets to “big” kids taking a trip back in time with our nostalgic candies! We’ll welcome you with delicious coffee and teas, local hand-made chocolate barks and caramels, and retro treats!"
When Jeffrey Dean Morgan visited the Late Show with Stephen Colbert, before he arrived on our television screens to play eeny meeny miny moe, he shared the story of Ira and Samuel’s Sweet Shop.
"“The first guy I met in this town called Rhinebeck was Ira, and he owned this candy store. He passed away a few years ago and Paul (Rudd) and I had been friends for a while and we just didn’t want it to turn into a smoothie stand or something. It had been there since the early ’90s so we were like, ‘Yeah, let’s pool our money together and get a candy store’ so now we’re the proud owners of Samuel’s Sweet Shop!”"
Please watch the clip, when Jeffrey talks about how his son loves the candy store, it’s adorable. If you don’t live in the upstate New York area, you can order candy from the website. I will be adding Samuel’s Sweet Shop to my The Walking Dead holiday gift guide this year for sure!

It’s still amazing to remember that we are going to hate this sweet shop owning, smiling, lovable man we’ve seen at Comic-Con and on talk shows as soon as October comes around.
