Oscar’s Red Hat brings his fan art to the Monroe Comic Con
By Susie Graham
Oscar Rodriquez will bring his extensive collection of The Walking Dead fan art to the Monroe Comic Con this Saturday in Monroe, Michigan.
The Monroe Comic Con will feature quite a few guests of interest to fans of The Walking Dead this weekend. Hilltop Ethan, Justin Kucsulain; Alexandria resident, Dahlia Legault; and walkers Skip Bartlett, Katie Lumpkin, and Stephen Vining will be signing autographs and taking pictures with fans.
In the vendor/artist area, Oscar Rodriguez, known all over Twitter and Facebook and to The Walking Dead cast members as Oscar’s Red Hat, will be at a table at his first comic con with his The Walking Dead fan art.
Everything is a canvas, and no piece is ever finished.~Oscar Rodriguez
Oscar was born into an artistic family but was never supported or directed into art. The Walking Dead awakened the artist within him. It brought that part of him back to life. He draws for himself and he draws all the time. The sofa in his drawing den is filled with his work.
Oscar’s motto also applies to the show. The Walking Dead paints beautiful pictures of souls, and no character or relationship is fully explored in the time they are given on screen. As with art, there is so much more to things than just what we see.
Magnitude. Simple. Unknown.
In my conversation with Oscar, he used three words to describe the The Walking Dead that I want to use as a theme. He talked about the magnitude of what’s going on in such a simple situation as the dead coming back and how he’s always been fascinated by the unknown.
Unknown. Something that occurs to me about drawing is that even though you have an idea what you want to draw, there is a certain amount of unknown involved. You don’t know how it will turn out. Oscar talked about erasing and changing quite a bit, even to the point of erasing his signature and fixing up a detail after he’s given a drawing to someone. He’s recently been giving himself “no-erase” challenges.
Simple: Oscar said he finds drawing soothing, euphoric, heavenly and healing. He draws everywhere and on everything. He drew Negan on the cardboard flap of a box that was headed to the garbage. He draws on napkins and place mats.
Magnitude.Meeting Norman Reedus and having a picture tweeted of Oscar in his red hat turned into the hashtag of Oscar’s Red Hat. His big smile, and gregarious nature, even within 140 characters, led him to have a huge following on Twitter and a nice platform for sharing his art.
Simple. Magnitude. Unknown. Oscar feels very complimented when people tell him he’s talented, but every once in a while he will look at one of his own pieces and feel proud or really love it. And there have been a few times when people have seen things in his work that he didn’t even see. Things in the eyes. Certain emotions. His work has moved people.
