Season premieres have quite a few things in common. Before the season 7 premiere of The Walking Dead we will take a look at what those things are.

With the premiere of what is possibly the most anticipated season premiere of The Walking Dead yet, let’s take a look at what makes a season premiere different from a regular episode and then take a look at each season premiere of the show so far in a series of articles.

First let’s look at what qualities a season premiere has as an episode and for fans. Why is it so special? What do they have in common? How can we examine each premiere from each of the 6 seasons so far, even the first season pilot.

Characters

The premieres need to remind us about the characters we love that we’ve missed. If there are new characters to be introduced in that half of the season, we should get a hint about them in some way. The characters drive the story of that season. We should feel like we are thrilled to see them again after the summer.

We should get that feeling that we get when we haven’t seen friends or family in a long time and we don’t even realize how much we’ve missed them until we see them again and we are giddy with excitement when they arrive at our house.

Quotes

Memorable quotes are something that The Walking Dead gives us in most episodes, but the premieres should be filled with several memorable lines. The memers shouldn’t have to work too hard the next day to have great quotes to use.

Walkers

It is The Walking Dead, we need to see walkers in the premieres to remind us of what we’re fighting and why we’re surviving. Sometimes they are herds, sometimes they are individual interesting walkers. Sometimes they are important walkers that are part of important events. Sometimes they are just ordinary walkers that remind us that they are part of everyday life now.

Great Opening

We need to be sucked in and excited right off the bat. The premiere should have people so pumped up before that theme music starts and the first commercial hits. That first commercial should be the time for people to be screaming with excitement that the show is back. Tweeting should be taking place with shouts and fist bumps everywhere and large eyes looking at other large eyes with huge smiles.

A sense that this is going to be a great season

The season premiere should make the audience feel like they are in for the best season yet every season. They should be so excited that the show is back. It should feel like the wait was worth it and that time flew from the season finale from the season before until now. They should start thinking of all the possibilities this new season will bring with it. They might even start thinking about how fast the season will go and how it will be awful to wait until February again.
