You earn what you take. Negan’s dropping by Alexandria this week to make sure everything is on the up and up. Business is about to pick up on The Walking Dead.

It hasn’t been a week yet in Walking Dead time but Negan loves making surprise house calls. A good neighbor he is! Previously we saw Negan step on Rick’s confidence and keep his boot there. Grimes’ confidence is now at an all time low, rock bottom. Rick will deliver the message to his people in Alexandria this week that, he’s no longer in charge, Negan is. For the first time on this show, this isn’t a clever ploy, no act by Carol, rather it’s the truth. Bitter reality but reality just the same.

There is no door number 4. No way out. As Daryl found out last week, sometimes things don’t work out to plan. Escapes at fingertip length suddenly stretch to a canyon leap. A leap of faith where you don’t make it to the other side, well maybe Negan’s fence of undead disbelievers. Instead Daryl found himself surrounded by Negan’s henchmen as a reward. As the window to escape sealed shut.

That’s how fast things change, you go from being the prestigious Governor of Woodbury to living in exile at the creek. You take ownership of Alexandria one day, only to lose its sovereignty on another. Quicker than you can snap your fingers. There’s always someone out there wanting what you already have. What you take for granted, they’re eyeing and foaming at the mouth at the prospect of holding it.

Walking Dead Episode Promo: Negan Arrives in Alexandria

This is the weakest state Sheriff Rick Grimes has appeared for the entirety of the show. It’s not just that he’s at a loss for answers, he doesn’t seem to be actively looking for one. The loss of Abraham and Glenn as well as the Carl moment that almost happened has broken Rick.

It’s not just about him. No move comes without a counter move by the Saviors. Literal checkmate. As Negan once said “Think about what has happened and can STILL HAPPEN RICK!”
