The Walking Dead issue 161 review: The Whisperer War Part 5 of 6

Was issue 161 of The Walking Dead comic book series any good? Check out the review of The Whisperer War part 5 of 6 to find out what worked and what didn’t.
Released on Wednesday, December 7, 2016, issue 161 of The Walking Dead continued the stories of The Whisperers assault on all of the surrounding communities, with The Hilltop being in the most danger.
It is HIGHLY advised that you have read all the comics through ‘The Whisperer War part 5 of 6′ if you plan on reading this review, since there will be a lot of spoilers when explaining what the good and bad parts of the issue were.
So, without further ado, let’s get started by talking about one of the best things from December’s issue of the The Walking Dead:
The fake-out of killing off Carl was great. Using multiple panels to draw out his fight for survival to eventually have him pass out from smoke inhalation after saving the lives of two residents would have been a hero’s death. Thankfully, he was later saved, but the way it was presented in led fans to believe this may have actually been the end of young Mr. Grimes. Bravo.
Sadly, the war isn’t over when The Whisperers are dead. Hearing that The Saviors are considering taking over when Alexandria and The Hilltop are at their weakest is a scary thought, since they could hold nearly all the cards in the war, especially if they stop Eugene’s delivery or ammunition to Rick and the gang.
The dynamic between Dwight and Negan continues to be interesting. Dwight may have appeared to be picking on Negan a bit, but he actually seemed to be encouraging him to be more compassionate and stop focusing on his own issues. Of course, he doesn’t realize that Negan losing Lucille was more devastating to him than he ever could have imagined.

It looks like The Hilltop is basically lost. The fire has consumed nearly everything and the survivors there may not be able to continue living there. There is a lot of room at both The Kingdom and Alexandria, but it will be interesting to see who decides to go to which locations.
Not only did Lydia make her choice of settlements clear in this issue, but she did so with authority. The answer may have been a little foggy before this since her mother was still alive, but now she has chosen to fight against the people who were bad to her and fight for her own freedom and those she has learned to care about.
Overall, this was mostly an action-based issue, but there were plenty of seeds planted for the future. Honestly, every page of The Whisperer War part 5 of 6 was gripping and entertaining. There may not have been one single way to improve upon December’s issue.
