Terrified Eugene was carted off to the Sanctuary in “Hearts Still Beating” after Negan learned of his special skill set. But what might he be doing there?

When we last saw Dr. Eugene Porter he had been taken prisoner by Negan and the Saviors. Rosita had fired her gun at Negan, which led to a chain of events where Olivia was killed by Arat and Eugene confessed to making the bullet. Negan didn’t believe that Rosita or Tara made the bullet, but he had no trouble believing Eugene.

Without really realizing it, Eugene is more of a survivor than he realizes. Eugene survived the initial undead outbreak by pretending that he knew the cure for the outbreak of zombies all over. That was enough for Abraham to make sure Eugene survived. Now Eugene must play that game again, but this time there is a lot more riding on it.

There’s no question that Negan sees Eugene’s potential. Negan will also see lots of untapped potential in Eugene. Negan appreciates skilled workers. That’s why the Sanctuary’s doctor is safe, and that’s what will get Eugene through this ordeal. A man who can manufacture bullets from shell casings is worth his weight in gold in the middle of an apocalypse. Negan may threaten Eugene, but the odds are good that Eugene won’t be harmed in any way. Negan won’t have a problem scaring the hell out of Eugene, but he won’t hurt someone who could be that useful.

And let’s face it, our friend with the strong hair game would probably love hearing “Easy Street” on repeat. That’s his kind of party.

The key for Eugene is to stay strong and do what he can to follow Negan’s rules. Negan saw the fear in Eugene’s expression and he knows that Eugene isn’t going to be hard to break like Daryl. Eugene just needs to survive so that he can be rescued.

If nothing else Eugene can buy time and pull an Emmett Brown, manufacturing explosives using pin ball machine parts. It certainly fooled the Libyans in Back to the Future!
