We were introduced to a new group called the Scavengers in The Walking Dead episode “New Best Friends”.  Rick is forced to fight a particularly dangerous walker armed with metal spikes all over its head and body. Michonne helps Rick find a way to survive, but I had a few other ideas as well.

Let me preface this by saying, I would be one of the least capable residents of a zombie apocalypse. If you need a craft project, I’m your girl. Heck, I can even hold my own in charades. But fighting walkers? Not my skillset.

With that said, it is hard not to look at that glorious pile of trash and get creative about how to use the assortment of items that have been dumped. I say this in hindsight, of course, having watched the episode three times already!

Let’s revisit Rick’s dilemma. He struggles to find something to bring to the fight. I found it odd that he chose a computer keyboard to use to strike Winslow. The keyboard simply breaks apart.

Forced in close proximity to Winslow, Rick slams his hand through one of Winslow’s spikes to try and push him away. Rick’s leg is also ripped open at some point during the whole ordeal.

Rick and company have always been inventive with fighting and weaponry. Recall the creativity utilized in the train car at Terminus as they used belts, earrings, and more to create weapons.

So here is my “stab” at ideas for creatively fighting Winslow with the garbage:

  • I kept eyeing all those plastic storage containers. Why not throw one of those over Winslow’s head to cover those spikes? Maybe this could buy Rick a little more time.

I saw at least one tire in the pile.  Perhaps Rick could toss the tire around Winslow’s neck to create a protective rubber bumper with which to push Winslow to the ground.

  • Or how about making Winslow an inverse pin cushion? There were pillows and couch cushions all over. Rick could press a large cushion over the spikes on Winslow’s face to disorient him and then cover his whole body with similar items eliminating the spikes all together.

In fairness, my third idea is similar to what Michonne suggested as far as using the walls. Rick slams himself into the wall of garbage making items fall down upon Winslow knocking the walker to the ground. This gives Rick time to grab a sharp object and stab Winslow.

Next: The Walking Dead: Why not have an army of Winslows?

What objects did you seen in the walls of trash that would be helpful in a showdown with a Winslow walker? Please share!

Let’s see what new threats are encountered in the next all new episode of The Walking Dead on Sunday, February 25th on AMC.
