Did we lose anything or anyone in the latest episode of The Walking Dead titled “Hostiles and Calamities”?

The Walking Dead episode 7.11 returns us to the Sanctuary for Eugene’s orientation. Meanwhile, Negan discovers that Daryl is gone and he’s out for blood. Does everyone survive the episode? Are any serious losses encountered? Let’s take a look.

Eugene

Rest assured, Eugene is still alive and surprisingly well.  But he is not quite the same Eugene that was taken from Alexandria.

Eugene is quick to take on the false persona of Dr. Eugene Porter of the Human Genome Project. Eugene uses his old alter ego to impress Negan and seal his position of intellectual authority at the Sanctuary.

Eugene then takes his transformation a step further by succumbing to Negan’s philosophy that “we are all Negan”. In fact, Eugene says he was Negan before he even met Negan.

The question here is how much of this transformation is a facade. We already know that Eugene’s story about the Human Genome Project is merely a product of his clever imagination. But what about his devotion to Negan? Is Eugene just playing along? Have we lost the old Eugene?

Sherry

We don’t know for certain where Sherry is or if she is still alive. But we do know she fled the Sanctuary on her own.

Negan sends Dwight to find Sherry believing she must be responsible for Daryl’s escape.

Dwight returns to his old home that he shared with Sherry. He finds a letter from her that explains that she let Daryl go because she knew he reminded Dwight of who he used to be.

Dr. Carson

Dwight returns to the Sanctuary proclaiming that he did find Sherry and killed her after she was trapped by a group of walkers.

Furthermore, he plants the goodbye signature from Sherry’s letter in Dr. Carson’s office and makes it look as though Dr. Carson was the one who let Daryl go hoping to please Sherry.

Negan is about to burn Dr. Carson’s face with the iron when he gives Carson one last chance to “confess”. Dr. Carson makes a false confession to escape the iron.

In a completely ruthless turn of events, Negan throws Dr. Carson into the fire instead killing him.

Final Count, 1

Dr. Carson was the only fatality tonight, but Sherry’s fate is still unknown. As far as Eugene, we cannot be certain of his true commitment to Negan, but he is definitely putting on some sort of show with the old Human Genome Project story.
