At the very last minute the WGA and the AMPTP were able to reach a new agreement and avoid a strike that would have stopped production on The Walking Dead and other shows.

There will be no delay for The Walking Dead season 8. Filming for season 8 started yesterday with the cloud of a potential WGA strike hanging ominously. If the two sides had not been able to reach an agreement a strike would have gone into effect. A strike could have caused major delays in the filming of season 8.

Thankfully just after midnight the two sides were able to find some common ground and reach a new agreement. There is no WGA strike and filming for The Walking Dead season 8 will continue as planned.

Season 8 will kick off with the show’s 100th episode directed by Greg Nicotero. Next season fans will finally see All Out War between the survivor communities and Negan and The Saviors. Fans have been waiting for war for a long time. Showrunner Scott Gimple promised fans that the first half of season 8 will “melt their minds”.

The New Agreement

The WGA did not get everything that it wanted for the writers. But it did win some major concessions from the AMPTP. One of the biggest victories for the WGA in the new agreement is a clearer fee schedule for writers.

In the past writers would be committed to work on a show for the entire length of production but were only paid by the episode. So writers who worked on cable or streaming shows which have fewer episodes but the same production time as broadcast shows were losing money.

According to Variety under the new agreement a writer’s fee will cover 2.4 weeks of production time. After that time they must be paid more. This will game changing for the thousands of writers who have seen their pay decrease over the last few years because of the changes in the way that TV shows are made.
