***WARNING: The Walking Dead 168 spoilers below****
Issue 168 picks up right where last issue left off. Rick Grimes is walking away from the group he addressed inside Alexandria as everyone mourns the loss of Andrea by embracing each other and letting out some tears.
Next, the cleanup of Alexandria has begun. People are working on repairing the gate and cleaning up the debris from the fight with the walkers. Dwight explains that he took the initiative to get the gate back up for security reasons and Rick thanks him.
After an awkward pause between Rick and Dwight, Rick attempts to apologize to him for what happened with Sherry in his office. Dwight stops his apology and says that they both lost something important to them, so there is no need to apologize.
Just then. the voice of John boomed out and he called out Rick Grimes. He says Dwight relayed to them what happened with Andrea, and he offers his condolences. Plus, he stated that Dwight also said Sherry gave orders to help clean up Alexandria during their meeting.
Rick thanks John and says he hopes this can be a building block to repairing the relationship between the two communities. John says he did them a solid, but there is no telling what the future holds…but then asks to know where Sherry is.
Instead of answering, Rick tells John that he doesn’t want Alexandria as an enemy and that he should look back at how things were before and realize they are better. But John cuts him off and demands to know where Sherry is.
Matter-of-factly, Rick states that Sherry is dead. Confused and angry, John says that any hope of peace between the communities died with Sherry.
Dwight pulls his gun and tells Rick to step back and get in the house. Instead, Rick attempts to explain the situation to John and the rest of The Saviors in hopes of being able to work the situation out.
Negan interjects himself into the situation and says he will handle it. Dwight is hesitant to allow it, but Rick says that it is alright.
The speech begins with Negan giving credit for the survival of the people from The Sanctuary to two people: himself and Rick Grimes. He understands the anger and desire for revenge, but instead offers a proposition.
He says The Saviors can go back to the way things were. Led by Negan with the point system and ruling by fear, The Sanctuary could make a comeback. The first to agree was Mark, with nobody else stepping up.
After a moment, Negan asked if anyone else was joining. When nobody replied, he punched Mark across the face and told him he was stupid for wanting that, especially after the iron was used on his face in the past. Mark starts tearing up and apologizing, but Negan moves on.
Addressing John, Negan says he’s always liked him even if they disagreed in the past. But he says John is a strong and smart man who doesn’t want to be controlled. Not by Negan and not by Sherry. And that he should be happy she is dead.
John tells Negan to be careful, but then raises his rifle to his chest. Negan raises both hands in good faith and tells John to think about it for a moment. Sherry needed problems to fix. She did it with Dwight, Negan, and with John, and was now doing the same thing with Rick and Alexandria.
Negan continues saying that Sherry’s death is on her, not anyone else and it shouldn’t result in any more bloodshed. In fact, he continues saying that they should realize what kind of man Rick is for allowing them to walk away after what they were planning to do.
